The AI race is not just a chip race. It is becoming a race for the physical and programmable infrastructure that lets intelligence move. GPUs matter. Models matter. Data centers matter. But intelligence does not scale in isolation. It has to move between clouds, data centers, enterprise systems, applications, devices, and users. That movement requires fiber, private connectivity, low-latency networks, security, orchestration, and increasingly, software-defined control. That may be one of the most overlooked parts of the AI story. The companies building the most visible AI products will get the attention. But the companies building, controlling, or modernizing the infrastructure underneath them may shape how far AI can actually go. Every major technology wave has a hidden layer that makes the visible layer possible. For AI, that hidden layer may be infrastructure. Not just compute. Movement.

Opening ITF World 2026, imec CEO Patrick Vandenameele framed the challenge as one of orchestration across the full ecosystem, from materials and chips to systems, software, and infrastructure. “Scalable AI is not just a technology challenge. Nokia and Orange are teaming up with NVIDIA to push AI in radio access networks forward. The two companies are expanding their partnership to jointly develop and test AI-RAN use cases, backed by NVIDIA's AI infrastructure. The focus of this work is on making networks smarter. That includes improving how efficiently spectrum is used, enhancing radio performance through predictive optimisation, and opening the door to new services powered by AI processing.

For a while, it felt like the company had fallen out of the main AI conversation, especially with so much focus on GPUs and the obvious winners in the space. But recently, it feels like the narrative is starting to shift slightly. When you zoom out, AI isn’t just about models and headlines. It’s about the infrastructure underneath everything chips, manufacturing, data centres, long-term supply. And that’s where #Intel has always been relevant.
