In my recent posts, I came across many comments stating Instructional Design (ID) field is getting saturated. Let's discuss on this topic today. So, why is the ID field getting saturated? Here is my take. This may sound a bit harsh, but this is fact. I have observed many individuals who: 1) Create one course in Articulate Storyline 2) Complete a short certification from platforms like Udemy or Coursera 3) Transition from eLearning operations or teaching roles And then start calling themselves Instructional Designers. However, ID demands far more than just building content in an authoring tool. A strong Instructional Designer must be capable of: 1) Conducting Training Needs Analysis (TNA) 2) Paying strong attention to detail 3) Chunking and structuring complex content effectively 4) Demonstrating a strong grasp of written and verbal English 5) Dealing with ambiguity confidently 6) Applying adult learning principles appropriately 7) Understanding the real business problem Planning and structuring complete curricula 8) Explaining the “why” before the “how” Precizely, certifications alone do not make someone an expert Instructional Designer. They only provide theoretical knowledge. The real ID skills develop when you apply that knowledge in real-life and gain experience. This is a great graphic as it clearly explains why designing training is not as easy as it seems... It is not about a high number of step-by-step guides produced or video tutorials available 24/7. It is not even about making sure the expertise of Subject Matter Experts is well captured. Great training will be more than that - it will make sure that both the knowledge and experience are actually transferred to learners... and that requires a bit of hard work...

Feeling like Instructional Designers and Learning Developers are undervalued? Understand this shift yourself, and help others see it. 👀 👇 Every day, the price of information drops ⬇️ . More content becomes one-step accessible. As a result, it gets harder and harder to tell what truly matters, and what will actually work 🚀. So what does matter? Experience. Real, lived application of knowledge in context: - how it works in practice - what choice to make, and when - which approach fits which situation - what pitfalls to expect, and what opportunities to use That’s what Subject Matter Experts (SME) bring. Their value isn’t “what they know” anymore, it’s how they’ve seen it work (or fail) in real situations. And that’s a good thing. But here’s the catch. 🪝 Without a deliberate way to spread that expertise, making it accessible to the right people at the right moment, it stays local. Great insight remains trapped in conversations, documents, and individual heads. To make it travel 🧳, you need a specific approach, you need packaging. You need methodology. You need a deliberate approach. You need to package expertise into a meaningful learning product, designed for clarity, adult learning, and transfer. That’s why Instructional Design matters 💪 . It’s the craft that turns raw material into something that can be used, repeated, and scaled, and that actually changes behaviour. and drive organizational growth. Knowledge is abundant. I loved reading this post!! Instructional Design is not “nice to have.” It’s the difference between information and impact. We live in a world where knowledge is everywhere. Articles, AI tools, SMEs, documentation — it’s abundant. But abundance doesn’t equal understanding. Turning complex or curated information into tangible, meaningful adult learning is worth more than gold. Because when learning is designed well, it changes behavior. It builds capability. It drives performance. Without design, knowledge stays raw. With experience, it becomes valuable. With intentional instructional design, it becomes scalable and usable. If you work in L&D, don’t undersell what you do. We don’t just build courses — we architect clarity.

I’ve seen this firsthand in my work designing learning solutions and capability-building programs together with subject matter experts. In one project, an expert initially chose to design and deliver a course independently, feeling confident managing both the content and the learning process. We agreed to review participant feedback together after the first training. The feedback turned out to be very consistent: participants loved the expert and the depth of knowledge, but many struggled with the structure and didn’t always understand the purpose behind some of the exercises. As a result, the learning felt difficult to apply in practice - something that often happens when expertise hasn’t yet been translated into effective instructional design and practice-oriented learning. Only after reviewing the feedback together did the expert invite our team to collaborate. After that, participant feedback shifted almost entirely to positive. Expertise is powerful.
