Tomorrow, I'm moderating a 20-minute session with Justin M. Swagler, MBA from Spectro Cloud at the AI in Retail conference. My brief: structured fireside. Their slides. Their framework. My plan: ask the question every retailer in the room is thinking but nobody wants to say out loud. "How does edge AI make the human on the floor more powerful — instead of just replacing them with a kiosk?" In fashion, in premium retail, in any experience where the associate IS the experience — the technology story can't end at the infrastructure layer. It has to reach the shop floor, the fitting room, the moment of truth between a customer and the person who actually knows what they need. I've spent my career at the intersection of brand strategy and commercial scale. AI in retail is the most important conversation happening in our industry right now. AI has changed what it means for a brand to be ready. At Shoptalk Spring 2026, Amira Khalil from Commerce, Feedonomics, BigCommerce, and MakeSwift shared what brands need to focus on as AI reshapes how discovery and commerce work. “Preparation, assessment, and then understanding where all of your assets live and how you can centralize them is really important.” That centralization matters because product and brand data now has to move across multiple channels and systems that all interpret it differently. Structure and consistency in that data are what make visibility possible in an AI-driven environment. AI experiences that perform reliably in controlled environments can behave differently during live, high-traffic commerce scenarios. As concurrency increases, pressure builds across multiple systems at the same time - recommendations, pricing, promotions, inventory and checkout orchestration. This is often where patterns start appearing: - Recommendation latency increases - Promotions apply inconsistently - Inventory responses drift out of sync - Checkout handoffs become less reliable In many cases, the challenge is not the AI model itself. It is the coordination happening around it in real time.
