Cryptocurrency as an Investable Asset Class – 10 Lessons Cryptocurrencies have matured from experimental curiosities into a viable investable asset class whose return-generation and risk characteristics merit treatment within empirical asset pricing. A recent paper by Nicola Borri, Yukun Liu, Aleh Tsyvinski, Xi Wu summarizes ten facts from the literature that show cryptocurrencies share important similarities with traditional markets—comparable risk-adjusted performance and a small set of cross-sectional factors—while retaining distinctive features such as frequent large jumps and price signals embedded in blockchain data. Tether.io hits 500M verified users as stablecoin market nears $316B Tether has reached 500 million verified users worldwide, an 82% larger base than Circle’s, though its $182B market cap lead is only 58% higher, highlighting USDT’s stronger retail focus versus USDC’s institutional dominance. The company, which holds $127B in US securities, recently launched the Plasma blockchain, attracting $6B in TVL within a week and reinforcing its role in digital dollar adoption. 💡  𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗢𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗹𝗲𝘀 𝗕𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗸 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗶𝘀𝗺 𝗕𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗿 𝗶𝗻 𝗕𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗸𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗶𝗻 One of the fundamental principles of blockchain systems is 𝗱𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗶𝘀𝗺, every node must reach the 𝗲𝘅𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝘀𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘂𝗹𝘁 when executing a smart contract. That’s what ensures 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘀𝘂𝘀 and 𝗶𝗺𝗺𝘂𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆. But this rule also creates a limitation: ➡️ Smart contracts 𝗰𝗮𝗻’𝘁 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹-𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮 (like prices, weather, or APIs), because external data is 𝗻𝗼𝗻-𝗱𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰, it can change depending on when or where it’s fetched. This is where 𝗼𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗹𝗲𝘀 come in. 🧩 Oracles, like 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗸, securely 𝗯𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗴𝗲 𝗼𝗻-𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝗳𝗳-𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱𝘀. They collect data from multiple sources (𝗲𝘅𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀, 𝗔𝗣𝗜𝘀, 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘁𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀), aggregate and verify it through decentralized nodes, and deliver 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗱, 𝘁𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗲𝗿-𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗼𝗳 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝗱𝘀 to smart contracts. THE GREAT CONVERGENCE The convergence of DeFi/CeFi blockchain rails and legacy assets. I believe we’re in the incredibly messy transitional period, where legacy monetary markets meets blockchain. America, needs an edge in order to maintain its global influence. I think blockchain is that edge. Over the next decade it’s possible that we’ll see the tokenization of a multitude of monetary assets on blockchain rails which will likely benefit the broader market both directly/indirectly. PYTH - Oracle data for tokenized assets ATOM - Interoperability for Cross Chain CBDC/RWA XRP - Settlement/Global Payments DOT - Parachains for specialized tokenized apps AAVE - DeFi Lending for tokenized markets HBAR - Enterpize level tokenization ALGO - Public/Private infra/CBDC pilots ONDO - RWA/Tokenized Securities/Stock Market 2.0 AVAX - Subnet Infra/ Tokenized real estate Total Decentralization is a fallacy, but the convergence of the two is progress. Ever heard of “atomic settlement”? It sounds complex, but the idea is actually simple and powerful. A great way think about is like when you pay cash at a store, the exchange is instant, you hand over the money as you receive the item. Both sides of the transaction complete at the same moment. That’s the concept behind atomic settlement. In traditional systems, settlement has “legs”, where one side moves first (like the asset), and the other side (the payment) follows later. That timing difference can introduce a bit of risk or delay in completing the transaction. Atomic settlement changes that by having both parts of a transaction, money and asset, settle simultaneously or not at all.
