Today, the NAACP gathered on the steps of the Tennessee Supreme Court following oral arguments in NAACP, Gloria Sweet-Love, et. al v. The State of Tennessee Governor, et. al, challenging the unlawful process leading to adoption of the state's racially discriminatory Congressional map. The emergency lawsuit challenges a 48-hour special session carried out by state lawmakers earlier this month as both unlawful and unconstitutional. “Across the South we are witnessing officials recklessly moving to dismantle Congressional districts that have provided Black communities a voice in our democracy. It is not surprising that in their mad dash to disenfranchise Black voters, they are breaking laws, defying rules and running afoul of state constitutional guardrails." — NAACP General Counsel Kristen Clarke
Proud to be a Silver Life Member of the NAACP since November 2024. I hope to see a Direct Litigation lawsuit for Reparations ⚖️ to follow, and soon.🫂
We must keep the faith and the 14th Amendment protecting us.
Redrawing maps in a 48-hour special session to dilute Black representation is not governance, it's erasure. The NAACP showing up on the steps of the Tennessee Supreme Court is a reminder that the fight for the ballot never really ended. It just moved to new terrain. Watching this closely and grateful for the legal advocates who refuse to let this stand unchallenged🌄
