Without an ambitious and forward‑looking national strategy, resilient, high‑quality mobile connectivity across the UK will remain out of reach. As an industry, we welcome last week’s Mobile Market Review and will work together to deliver a comprehensive, coordinated response to the Government’s call for evidence. But the priority must now shift from gathering yet more evidence to taking meaningful action. We remain committed to partnering with Government to unlock investment, accelerate rollout, and deliver the secure connectivity that communities and businesses across Britain deserve. I’ve always believed that you don't necessarily need to move mountains to see a shift in results. Often, the most significant progress comes from simply clearing the path. Mobile UK has submitted its response to the Government’s planning reform consultation. Our position is straightforward: we aren't looking for a total rewrite of the rulebook. Instead, we are advocating for simple, targeted reforms designed to modernise the English planning system so it is effectively "fit for 5G." By focusing on these specific updates, we believe the UK can: - Unlock between £1–2.5bn in GDP growth through improved connectivity. - Reduce the administrative burden currently weighing down local planning teams. - Deliver necessary capacity to communities in a more predictable timeframe. Realising the UK's digital ambitions requires a planning framework that keeps pace with the technology it supports. Making these small adjustments now ensures the system works better for everyone involved. 👉 Read our latest blog to explore the proposed reforms and their role in the UK’s digital future: https://lnkd.in/eZ5imD8W #BuildingmobileBritain #Infrastructure #5G #Mobile #Connectivity #PlanningReform #Planning #LiveBetterConnected
Mobile UK has responded to the Government’s planning reform consultation, and outlines simple targeted reforms that will have a big impact on accelerating digital infrastructure deployment by modernising the English planning system to be "fit for 5G. A few small but focused updates could unlock £1–2.5bn in GDP, speed up upgrades, ease pressure on local planning teams, and get new capacity to communities sooner. The industry is ready to work with Government to deliver nationwide 5G and keep the UK competitive in a rapidly evolving digital world. 👉 Read our blog to explore the reforms we’re proposing and why they matter for the UK’s digital future: https://lnkd.in/ea6e7rBM #Connectivity #BuildingMobileBritain #LiveBetterConnected #Telecoms #Government

The Government is currently wrestling with some big challenges on planning, not least resourcing hard-pressed planning departments. We have proposed some targeted changes that would not only relieve some of this pressure but also give a big boost to the UK's capacity and coverage of mobile connectivity

France’s mobile market is approaching a critical point. Sustained pricing pressure, high investment requirements and constrained returns are putting the current market structure under strain. As a result, consolidation is increasingly part of the debate – for operators, regulators and investors alike. In this article, we explore what could drive mobile market consolidation in France, what form it might take, and the implications for the wider telecoms ecosystem. Is red tape killing Britain’s 5G future? VodafoneThree Business Director Nick Gliddon reveals a frustrating reality for the UK’s digital ambitions: in some major cities, 86% of planning requests for 5G infrastructure are being rejected. While the government has set clear goals for connectivity, the execution on the ground is struggling to keep pace. As Gliddon points out, you cannot "virtualise" essential services like healthcare and education if the underlying connection doesn't exist. This isn't just about faster downloads; it is about the foundational infrastructure required for a modern economy to function. 💡 The #SingleMarket is the cornerstone of Europe's competitiveness and a driving force for integration, prosperity, and scale. Yet, in the telecoms sector, this narrative has often felt more aspirational than real since the outset of market liberalisation. Our Policy Brief outlines a clear vision for the future of telecoms, built on three pragmatic pillars to advance the Single Market: consolidation within national markets to achieve scale, regulatory simplification over harmonisation, and technological convergence. 👉 Download our Policy Brief "Breaking the Barriers: How Europe Can Unlock a True Single Market for Telecommunications" here: https://lnkd.in/dvWnk6c4

The UK’s ambition for world class mobile connectivity is being held back by an outdated planning system that slows down network upgrades and new site deployment. By embracing 5G adoption across key sectors, £9-37bn annually by 2035 could be unlocked with a reformed planning system in place. To deliver the next generation of mobile connectivity, the planning system must evolve. Faster approvals, fewer administrative barriers, and a modernised approach to digital infrastructure are essential to support growth, innovation and nationwide digital inclusion.
