Identity architects are being asked to bridge data silos and simplify user experience while also authenticating non-human entities like machines, workloads, and AI agents. These goals are even more difficult to achieve when complying with the principles of Zero Trust. The traditional tools of federated IdP architecture aren't up to the job. I often talk about how verifiable credentials can pull trusted identity attributes directly from the user where they are needed, but there are other tools that can also help evolve an identity architecture toward Zero Trust.
