There is a common myth that colorists spend hours perfecting every single shot in a vacuum. The reality is much more systematic. With the first stage — technical deconstruction and scene cuts — complete, the second stage begins. And it is still not about creativity. It is about grouping. Before applying any color, a chaotic timeline of clips must be turned into an organized system. This is the logical sorting of material for batch processing. I group the footage not just by scene, but by complex criteria: A/B cameras, specific lenses, shared lighting setups, or even character continuity. DaVinci Resolve handles this efficiently with Color Tags, metadata, Groups, and Shared Nodes. Why this borderline-logistical pedantry? To prevent scalable chaos. Grading 50 clips manually, one by one, is a fast track to burnout and inconsistency. Grouping creates a unified pipeline for an entire scene. I apply foundational corrections — technical transforms and basic balancing — to all clips in a group simultaneously. It saves hours of manual labor and ensures the scene's foundation is monolithic. For the viewer, this means continuity. A mismatch in color or contrast between shots within the same scene feels amateurish and instantly breaks immersion. Seamless grouping creates the illusion of a natural, cohesive environment. Technical discipline at this stage is the foundation for future creativity. In this detailed tutorial, the team demonstrates a complete film scanning pipeline: importing negative scans into the Photo page for album organization, rotation, and cropping, then moving to the Colour page for precise negative inversion using RGB curve balancing (leveraging unexposed film edges as neutral points), scopes-guided correction, selective channel adjustments, and targeted noise reduction while preserving authentic grain. Logbook: PREVIS | Rio de Sangue (Retrospective) Pre-visualization is a core part of my workflow for studying framing, camera movement, and lighting. This video shows the process developed in 2024 during the pre-production of "Rio de Sangue". The goal was to arrive on set with every technical challenge mapped out: Location Photogrammetry: I used a drone to capture the area and processed the images in Polycam to generate the 3D model. Integration: The model was imported into Unreal Engine, where we added architectural elements from the art department (created in SketchUp). Light Simulation: By using exact geographic coordinates and filming dates, we simulated accurate sun behavior to plan our shooting schedule. Technical Collaboration: This allowed me to virtually navigate the location to define blocking and work with gaffer Maurílio Aquino on the placement of diegetic light sources for night scenes. For this project, I wanted to capture the fluid motion and high-end aesthetics of automotive cinematography. 🛠️ Technical Workflow 3D Rendering & Animation (Blender 3D): Focused on realistic car paint shaders and high-speed motion blur. The challenge was balancing the reflective surfaces of the car with the warm, dynamic lighting of the sunset. Texture Mastery (Adobe Photoshop): Fine-tuned the road textures and environment maps to ensure the lighting felt integrated and authentic to the scene. Cinematic Finish (DaVinci Resolve): Used Resolve for color grading to enhance the "Golden Hour" glow and timed the visual transitions to create a high-energy, premium feel. ⚡ The Vision The goal was to move beyond a static render and create a dynamic brand-style commercial. By focusing on the "CW Wheels" branding and the sweeping coastal environment, I aimed to showcase how 3D tools can create hyper-realistic marketing content that rivals traditional film.
