The Chan Zuckerberg Initiative just launched two open tools worth bookmarking: 1️⃣ Knowledge Graph – If you (like us) love The Coherence Map by Achieve to Core, you'll love this! It maps every state’s standards and breaks them into building blocks of skills and concepts. Teachers can lean on it to design lessons that not only align with standards, but also show students how today’s work connects to tomorrow’s goals. 👉 Classroom use: When planning a lesson, identify the prerequisite skill your students might need more practice with, or the “next step” skill you can preview for enrichment. It’s a quick way to strengthen scaffolding. 2️⃣ Evaluators – Early versions focus on literacy, helping ensure reading passages and tasks are actually at the right complexity for a given grade. 👉 Classroom use: If you’re pulling a passage from an AI generator (or adapting one), run it through a readability check. It helps ensure you’re giving students material that’s accessible and challenging at the right level. Why Even Brilliant AI Tutors Fail Without Thoughtful Implementation Following my post on Friday about AI tutoring research, today I look at what research can tell us about why brilliantly designed AI tutors fail. The Evidence on Implementation: Wu et al. (2024) describe a "bidirectional relationship" between "AI-supported Teacher" and "Teacher-supported AI." The most effective implementations occur when teachers understand what AI is doing and can guide students strategically. What Goes Wrong: Over-Reliance and Reduced Critical Thinking Abbas et al. (2024) found that ChatGPT usage was associated with increased procrastination, reduced memory retention, and poorer academic performance. Zhang et al. (2024) identified a concerning pattern: students with lower self-efficacy experience higher stress, leading to inflated expectations from AI and greater dependency. Diminished Self-Monitoring Wang et al. (2024) found that AI-assisted learners demonstrated "relatively low self-monitoring"—raising questions about whether AI inadvertently reduces the metacognitive awareness essential for self-directed learning. The "Learning Optimisation Gap" Li et al. (2024) identify gaps between AI capabilities and users' ability to leverage them effectively. Without proper understanding, even powerful tools deliver minimal benefit. What Implementation Requires: For School Leaders and Implementers: - AI Literacy for Teachers Teachers need to understand what the AI is doing and why, not just how to turn it on. This isn't optional, it is essential. - Build in Critical Evaluation: Both teachers and students need frameworks for validating AI-provided information, particularly given hallucination risks with generative AI. - Monitor for Unintended Consequences: Watch for over-reliance, reduced critical thinking, or widening gaps between students with support at home and those without. - Protect Human Relationships: AI should enhance, not replace, teacher-student relationships that research consistently shows are fundamental to learning. - Allocate Real Resources: Time for teacher training, technical support, and ongoing monitoring aren't optional extras, but prerequisites for success. For Teachers Using AI Tutors: - Position yourself as the guide - Students need you to help them understand when and how to use AI tools effectively - Teach critical validation - Don't assume students will naturally question AI outputs.
