I've just read this from Michael Clark and it really landed: “We’ve updated the language of leadership, but not the operating system behind it.” YES! Leaders are being asked to operate in conditions they were never prepared for: complexity, speed, constant exposure, (and now AI is layered on top ... I'll be adding to that conversation soon - watch this space). So, to Michael's core point: this isn’t just a behaviour gap. It’s a thinking gap. YES! But I’d take it one step further .... because even thinking doesn’t hold under pressure. In the moment - when the stakes rise, when the room shifts, when you’re being watched - you don’t access your best thinking, you access your state. That’s the gap. While we’re still training what to say, how to behave, and even how to think, we're ignoring what makes any of that possible in the first place. Pressure doesn’t test your knowledge - it tests your nervous system. If that system contracts, hesitates, or goes into protection … no model, framework, or strategy will save you. I lead like I coach, because the "why" is the same: Guide and help develop those around me. We are a team - it's not about me. Autonomy is essential for those in your circle to develop their decision making, adaptability, and leadership capacity. Micromanaging leaders and overbearing instructors alike hinder growth. I don't want to be an "easy button." You help foster creativity, adaptability, resilience, etc. by including others' ideas, letting your people stumble, fail (within the bandwidth), and succeed in pursuit of the long-term (strategic) win. This also creates tremendous buy-in, which is essential - both in the training environment and team work landscape. Start coaching and guiding, stop dictating and micromanaging.

Your Mindset Is Contagious Whether you're leading a team, raising children, or building a business, your mindset spreads. David Schwartz observed that belief is contagious. So is doubt. When a leader believes growth is possible, the team finds ways to grow. When a leader believes limitations are fixed, the team stops trying to exceed them. I've seen this play out repeatedly: teams mirror the mindset of their leaders. Pessimistic leaders get cautious teams. Growth-oriented leaders get innovative teams. The most powerful leadership tool you have isn't a strategy deck or an org chart. It's the mindset you bring into the room. Before your next team meeting, ask yourself: What mindset am I modeling? What beliefs am I making contagious? Your people are watching. And learning.

If you want to be a better leader, studying business isn’t enough. And I’m not saying that to discredit your hard work. Business knowledge is useful. Technical expertise is useful too. An MBA might even help you understand the language of business. But none of that is what actually makes someone a good leader. Leadership is about understanding people. → How they think. → How they behave. → How they react. Your job as a leader is to help people move forward and produce results together. And that doesn’t happen through more tools or AI. It happens when you understand human behaviour. If you want to lead people well, start by studying psychology. It’ll teach you far more about leadership than another business textbook ever will.
