BRAID researcher Fabio Tollon's work features in the State of AI Ethics Report (SAIER) Vol. 7, “AI at the Crossroads: A Practitioner’s Guide to Community-Centered Solutions,” published by the Montreal AI Ethics Institute. This edition explores how we can move from principles to practice in AI, grounding ethics in real-world action, collaboration, and shared accountability. His article (at chapter 2), The Contested Meanings of Responsible AI, speaks to 'Responsible AI' as being not a singular concept or effort with a fixed meaning and clear definitional boundaries, but a complex and dynamic ecosystem pervaded by tensions and interdependencies. AI Ethics and the Question of Moral Agency Much of what we call AI ethics rests on principles — fairness, accountability, transparency, human rights. These are vital, but they are also thin. They tell us what ought to be done, not how ethical life actually takes form within the complex ecologies of data, code, and intention that now shape our world. Philosophers have long warned that ethics cannot be reduced to compliance. Kant saw moral life as rooted in freedom — the capacity to act from duty, not compulsion. Yet in the age of algorithmic mediation, freedom itself is quietly redefined. Systems built to assist our choices begin to pre-structure what counts as one. We remain formally autonomous, but the ground beneath that autonomy has shifted. Critical and decolonial theorists push this further: whose freedom, whose rationality, whose values are embedded in the infrastructures that now govern ethical and political life? AI does not simply automate decisions; it reproduces older asymmetries of visibility and voice. To speak of “alignment” without asking whose values are being aligned is to confuse governance with ethics. Ethics cannot survive as a process flow. It requires formation — habits of moral attention, spaces for reflection, and institutions that cultivate discernment rather than obedience. When oversight becomes automatic, moral agency atrophies. The question, then, is not how to make AI ethical, but how to remain ethical in relation to AI. How to design institutions that sustain judgement rather than replace it. How to preserve plural moral grammars in a world increasingly mediated by code. Through the Istituto Fiorentino di Critica Culturale (IFCC), this inquiry forms part of our research axis Critical Technologies and Digital Subjectivity. Our forthcoming "Florence Papers on AI and Democracy" will open this conversation further — exploring what forms of moral life remain possible when intelligence itself becomes infrastructural. AI will not decide these questions for us. AIF Insights No. 36 (2025) | Khmer Gatilok and Relational Ethics: A Cultural Lens for AI Morality This essay examines the Khmer ethical system of Gatilok as a culturally grounded framework for AI ethics. Unlike Western approaches that prioritize universal principles, Gatilok emphasizes relational, situational, and long-term moral reasoning rooted in Theravāda Buddhist concepts such as intention (cetanā), karma (kamma), and social harmony (sampheap). Through stories, proverbs, and oral traditions, Gatilok teaches that ethical behavior depends on context, relationships, and the consequences of actions over time. Applying these insights to AI governance highlights the importance of relational accountability, participatory oversight, culturally sensitive datasets, and long-term impact assessments. By integrating Gatilok into AI design and policy, this perspective encourages ethically aware, contextually appropriate, and culturally responsive AI systems that respect local values and foster social cohesion. https://lnkd.in/esTRW2fy

The Illusion of Objectivity in AI Ethics. One of the biggest misconceptions I’ve seen in AI governance is the belief that ethics can be automated. The truth is, every ethical framework begins with human interpretation — and interpretation is never neutral. AI systems don’t make moral choices; they execute the preferences and priorities embedded in their training data and objectives. What we call “ethical AI” often reflects the cultural, corporate, or political lens of those who define its parameters. Objectivity, in practice, is just consensus disguised as code. Research from The Alan Turing Institute’s AI Ethics and Governance in Practice programme (https://lnkd.in/eUVn_MMt) found that many organisations adopting AI governance models struggle to translate ethical principles into measurable actions — showing how easily ethics becomes an aspiration rather than a system of accountability. Similarly, UNESCO’s recommendation on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence (https://lnkd.in/ezvNEpCj) warned that overconfidence in technical safeguards can obscure deeper social and cultural biases. For me, genuine AI ethics starts with humility — the recognition that fairness isn’t a formula. After a 3-year pause, the State of AI Ethics Report is officially back. The 2025 Special Edition, launching November 4, returns at a moment when the gap between AI ethics on paper and ethics in practice has never been more urgent. This year’s edition digs into what responsible AI actually looks like in real systems, real institutions, and real communities. I’m honored to be featured in this Special Edition, read by more than 20,000 global subscribers, sharing insights from my, especially how I'm building ethical, people-centered AI capacity across Africa and beyond. My contribution draws from: 📌 Our commitment to embedding responsibility in technical teams, 📌 Our focus on knowledge and data solidarity, 📌 Our belief that global AI governance must be shaped by voices from the Global South, and 📌 The work we’re doing to ensure innovation and ethics move together, not apart.
