UNCF, the United Negro College Fund, known as the United Fund, is a philanthropic organization that funds scholarships for Black students and general scholarship funds for 37 private HBCUs. UNCF was incorporated on April 25, 1944, by Frederick D. Patterson, Mary McLeod Bethune, and others. UNCF is headquartered in DC. In 2005, UNCF supported approximately 65,000 students at over 900 colleges and universities with approximately $113 million in grants and scholarships. About 60% of these students are the first in their families to attend college, and 62% have annual family incomes of less than $25,000. UNCF administers over 450 named scholarships. UNCF’s president and chief executive officer is Michael Lomax. Past presidents of the UNCF included William H. Gray and Vernon Jordan. Though founded to address funding inequities in education resources for African Americans, UNCF-administered scholarships are open to all ethnicities; the great majority of recipients are still African American. It provides scholarships to students attending its member colleges and to those attending other colleges. Graduates of UNCF member institutions and scholarship recipients have included many Black people in business, politics, health care, and the arts. Some prominent UNCF alumni include Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Alexis Herman, Spike Lee, Samuel L. Jackson, General Chappie James, and Dr. David Satcher. UNCF adopted as its motto the maxim “A mind is a terrible thing to waste.” This maxim has become one of the most widely recognized slogans in advertising history. The motto was notably mangled in an address to the organization by VPOTUS Dan Quayle, who stated: “And you take the UNCF model, that’s what a waste it is to lose one’s mind or not to have a mind is being very wasteful. How true that is.” The motto, which has been used in numerous award-winning UNCF ad campaigns, was created by Forest Long, of the advertising agency Young & Rubicam, in partnership with the Ad Council. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence

On April 25, 1944, the United Negro College Fund (UNCF) was established, marking a pivotal step in strengthening access to higher education for African Americans. Created during a period of expanding educational ambition, the UNCF brought together a consortium of private historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) under a unified fundraising and support structure. The organization was founded with the leadership of Frederick D. Patterson, then president of Tuskegee Institute, along with other college presidents and philanthropic partners. Their approach was both practical and visionary: by pooling resources and coordinating national campaigns, they could sustain and grow institutions that had long served as centers of intellectual life, professional training, and community leadership. From its earliest years, the UNCF focused on scholarships, institutional funding, and public engagement. Its model allowed member colleges to expand academic programs, maintain facilities, and support students pursuing degrees across disciplines. Over time, the organization became one of the nation’s most effective educational support networks, helping hundreds of thousands of students attend and complete college. The UNCF’s work also reshaped how higher education philanthropy operated. Its campaigns connected donors across the country to the mission of HBCUs, translating collective investment into measurable opportunity. The organization’s message—later widely recognized through its slogan, “A mind is a terrible thing to waste”—reflected a broader commitment to cultivating talent, leadership, and innovation. Today, the UNCF continues to support dozens of member institutions and thousands of students each year. Its impact is visible in generations of graduates who have contributed to fields including science, education, public service, and the arts. By strengthening HBCUs and expanding access to higher education, the UNCF has played a defining role in shaping pathways of achievement and influence. The founding of the UNCF stands as a testament to coordinated vision and enduring commitment—an institutional effort that continues to open doors and sustain possibility. #OnThisDay #Resistance #Remembrance #USHistory #UNCF More info: https://uncf.org/ https://buff.ly/rvEh1Pd https://buff.ly/uT9NV0j Images: Top - The founders and early board members of the United Negro College Fund. 1944, UNCF Bottom- Current logo on the building of the UNCF headqurters in Washington D.C.

📚 On This Day in Black History – April 25, 1944 📚 Today we recognize a powerful moment in the fight for educational equity, the founding of the United Negro College Fund (UNCF). On April 25, 1944, Dr. Frederick D. Patterson of Tuskegee Institute, alongside visionary educator and activist Mary McLeod Bethune and other leaders, came together to create a unified solution to a pressing problem, how to sustain and strengthen private Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). 🎓 A United Mission Rather than competing for limited funds, these institutions joined forces through a national fundraising campaign, creating a steady, reliable stream of support to ensure Black students had access to higher education. 💰 A Breakthrough Moment The very first UNCF campaign raised over $760,000, nearly three times what these schools had been able to raise on their own. This proved that unity could create lasting impact. 📈 A Lasting Legacy Since its founding, UNCF has raised billions of dollars and helped more than half a million students graduate from college. It remains the largest minority education organization in the United States. 🧠 A Message That Still Resonates “A mind is a terrible thing to waste.” This iconic slogan continues to remind us of the importance of investing in education and opportunity for future generations. The creation of UNCF stands as a testament to what vision, collaboration, and commitment to community can achieve. ✊🏾 #BlackHistory365 #UNCF #HBCUExcellence #OnThisDay #BlackEducation #MaryMcLeodBethune #FrederickDPatterson #InvestInEducation #TheEnglandManor

The economic significance of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) is profound, yet often overshadowed by political discourse. True impact can be obscured by large funding announcements and the origin of those funds, masking the critical role these institutions play. Focusing on the source and narrative, rather than the substantial contribution, misses a vital economic story. Understanding the authentic economic footprint of HBCUs requires looking beyond the headlines to appreciate their lasting influence. #HBCUs #EconomicImpact #Education #HigherEducation #Philanthropy

The economic contributions of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) are profound, yet often overshadowed by political discourse and funding announcements. Headline figures can obscure the real story: where the money originates and the sustained, systemic impact it generates. Focusing solely on the source of funds, rather than the consistent investment, risks misinterpreting the true value and challenge. A deeper look reveals that the narrative around HBCU funding requires more nuanced consideration beyond surface-level political statements. #HBCUs #HigherEducation #EconomicImpact #EducationPolicy #Philanthropy
