I think what a lot of designers lack is business sense. Every ‘I will make you a product designer in 10 mins’ course is filled with - Figma - Wireframing - Prototyping None actually has the substance that will carry the designer in a product team - How to ask questions when working with a product manager - How to collaborate with Tech, and Product - How to make yourself useful in a business meeting. Everyone is following the game of aesthetic, everyone knows ‘it’s about the user’, but no one considers business, data, and ‘why’ are we priortising it. On this episode on when you think you’re done designing, you really aren’t.. I tried cleaning up a design handoff this week using the Focus View and Color/Responsiveness toggles update on figma and I can tell you it isn’t just for developers. At first, it felt like just another dev quality life update. But the more I used it, the more I realized these tools expose how messy our design intentions really are. When you switch to Focus View, you see what actually matters in context, not the clutter we sometimes leave behind. And when you toggle through color and responsiveness, it shows whether your layout logic holds up beyond the perfect frame size you designed it in. It’s humbling and redefining how I should think about clarity. You start catching inconsistencies you’d never notice in default view, tokens that don’t match, spacing that collapses, breakpoints that don’t survive real world use. I’ve got to say it's going to be forcing more designers to think like engineers before handoff. And I think that’s the real power of this feature to close the isolation thinking gap when it comes to product development, Not just efficiency but Accountability. So before you celebrate how smooth your Design Mode looks, ask yourself, could your design still stand on its own if no developer was prettying it up to hold in production? 💡 I generally present only one design option to stakeholders. My Figma files are clean—showing only the recommended path forward. 👉 That doesn’t mean I don’t iterate. It means I force myself to answer the hard questions before presenting. I’ve come to see showing multiple options as a form of intellectual laziness: 1. Either I haven’t asked the right framing questions ❓ 2. Or I can’t weigh the merits of each option and commit ⚖️ If it’s (1), I need to ask better questions: not “Which layout is better?” but “What about the business problem or user need do I need clarified?” If it’s (2), that speaks poorly of me as a designer. I’m hired for my design judgment. If I can’t choose, I’m not doing my job. Yes, stakeholders will always tell you what they prefer when asked—but they aren’t UX experts. Products designed “by consensus” often lose internal consistency because stakeholders aren't thinking about the design issues deeply. 🎯 Great designers don’t just present options. They present the right solution. The solution that is right for users and the business.
