I recently designed a beginner-friendly course using Articulate Rise 360 titled “Getting Started with Articulate 360: A Beginner’s Guide for E-Learning Designers.” This course is created for anyone who is new to Articulate 360 and wants to understand: 1. How Rise 360 supports responsive e-learning 2. Structuring content with clear learning objectives 3. Using blocks and interactions effectively 4. Designing learner-centric, clean, and accessible modules While building this course, I focused not just on using the tool but on applying instructional design principles, clarity, flow, engagement, and simplicity. This hands-on experience helped me strengthen my understanding of: 1. Learning experience design (LXD) 2. Content chunking and sequencing 3. In this week’s YouTube video, I’ve been playing around with building custom calculators in Articulate Storyline 360 using variables and triggers. It started as a simple mini calculator, but it’s really about something bigger: letting learners try things out inside the eLearning, rather than leaving the course to grab their phone or another app. Keeping everything on screen helps reduce distraction and cognitive load, and makes it easier for learners to stay focused on the task they’re actually meant to be doing (did you know the average person unlocks their phone 80-110 times a day, and about 80% of that isn't because of notifications - we do it ourselves!) I also touch on accessibility, including managing focus order so the interaction works properly with a keyboard and screen readers. Right at the end, I show a small amount of JavaScript, purely for formatting numbers. Storyline defaults to displaying answers to 2 decimal places, which is something people ask about all the time, especially when they want whole numbers or more precision. I’ve pinned the JavaScript in the comments so you can copy and paste it if you need it. Three weeks to build. Two days to realize no one's finishing it. One obvious mistake. I've observed talented instructors spend weeks rebuilding courses that learners never complete. This isn't due to weak content, but rather because the tool didn't fit the job. Here's what actually works: If speed matters more than polish: - iSpring Suite: Turn PowerPoint into SCORM-compliant courses in days, not weeks. Great for: compliance training, quick knowledge checks, video-based learning. If behavior change truly matters: - Articulate 360: Build scenarios, branching paths, and real learner decisions. - Adobe Captivate: Create simulations when "click next" training isn't sufficient. Great for: sales training, leadership development, technical skills. If you work with teams or enterprise clients: - Elucidat: Built for collaboration, analytics, and scale. - dominKnow | ONE: Enterprise workflows, translation management, structured reviews. Great for: global rollouts, regulated industries, multi-stakeholder projects. When NOT to over-engineer your course: - If the learner only needs to do one thing better, skip the branching logic. - If SMEs can't easily review it, your tool is already wrong. - If updates take days, your course will be outdated before it launches. The mistake? Choosing tools based on features instead of outcomes. The best authoring tool isn't the most powerful one; it's the one that ensures your course is shipped, reviewed easily, and actually completed by learners. Stop using icons as buttons in Articulate Storyline. I regularly see "buttons" that are actually just icons from the Content Library. A classic example: the close icon with a circle and an X, where only the X and the circle stroke are clickable. The space inside looks clickable, but it’s dead space. Learners click. Nothing happens. They click again. It feels buggy, but it’s not Storyline. It’s the clickable space. Icons make poor buttons because their clickable area is often smaller than they look. What works better: • Use Storyline’s built-in buttons, they have many icons available • If you want a round button, use a rounded button and resize it into a circle • Or use a transparent shape as the button and then place the icon inside the Normal state The result: • easier to click • easier to edit • clearer for learners Follow if you want more "slides that click" fixes that make your course feel instantly more professional.

A great callout here that I see quite frequently actually! There are so many ways to create a positive, accessible experience in Articulate Storyline.
