Here’s a rule I like when editing a manuscript. Read the book and pay attention to when you lose attention. Every time you lose your attention, ask yourself: Am I bored reading this? Ninety-nine percent of the time the answer is, Yes. To paraphrase Elmore Leonard: Write your story then cut all the boring stuff. Most readers decide whether to keep reading a paragraph in about three seconds. Not because they’re impatient, but because they’re busy. When someone reads a self-help book, they’re usually looking for clarity, guidance, or encouragement. If the meaning of a paragraph isn’t immediately clear, readers often move on, sometimes without realizing why. This is something I think about when editing. When I review a manuscript, I often pause after a paragraph and ask myself a simple question: If a reader scanned this for three seconds, would the meaning be clear? Sometimes the fix is small: • Tightening a sentence • Moving the key idea earlier • Removing a phrase that slows the rhythm Those small adjustments can make a paragraph easier to absorb and far more powerful. Because in self-help writing, clarity isn’t just about style. Clarity helps readers understand ideas that might genuinely change their lives. Question for any independent authors in my network: How do you format your books? I used Microsoft Word in the past (it had a lot of advanced layout features) but 1) I do all my writing in Markdown now and 2) they literally changed the software into AI for some reason. If anybody has recommendations I'd really appreciate it.
