A Learning Model with the Environment in Mind 🧠 I love a good learning model. They help us make sense of how information moves from attention to memory to understanding. But most of them stop at the brain and thats ok if the goal is to summarise the internal process. But for young children especially, a model built on just the internal processes, can be a limitation for teaching and learning. Because, of their reduced cognitive capacity, children are built to use their environment so much more. When we treat learning as an entirely internal process, as primary educators, we risk missing how much it’s shaped by the environment: the classroom layout, the tools, the peers nearby, the teacher interactions, the cues, the scaffolds and feedback loops that guide thinking. Take whiteboard work, for example. It’s often seen as just a way to check understanding. But it’s also a manipulative — a space to place thinking, to organise, edit and refine it through physical action. Learning doesn’t happen in isolation. It’s embodied, social, and environmental. The brain does the learning — but the environment shapes the process. Hence why I worked with oliver caviglioli to design a model that takes the environment into consideration.
