We need to talk about how nonprofits engage and active volunteers. They're spending hours on spreadsheets, chasing people down via texts, manually matching volunteers to rol, and have zero visibility into what's actually working. Then they wonder why volunteers don't show up or don't come back. Here's what we've learned after working with dozens of organizations: it's not a people problem, it's a system problem. When you automate coordination, match skills to needs, and give your team real time insights, everything changes. Volunteers show up, they stay engaged and your staff finally can breathe. The nonprofit and community engagement landscape continued to evolve in 2025 — with formal volunteering participation rising to around 28.3% and informal helping climbing even higher. Our State of Volunteering 2025 report explores these shifts and reveals how short, flexible roles, clarity in volunteer expectations, and hybrid participation models became key drivers of engagement this year. Volunteering fails more often because of poor systems than lack of passion. After years of volunteering, I’ve seen this pattern repeat itself: Young people come in excited. They are ready to learn, contribute, and serve. But then… • No clear roles • No structure • No guidance • No feedback • No respect for their time And when they burn out or walk away, we say, “Volunteers are not committed.” That’s not true. Volunteers don’t quit service, they quit confusion, neglect, and exploitation. Passion is important, yes. But passion without structure leads to frustration. And frustration leads to disengagement. Effective volunteering requires: Clear expectations Proper onboarding Mentorship and support Respect for people’s time and growth Community-centered goals When volunteering is done right: Youth grow into leaders Communities experience sustainable impact Organizations build trust and continuity If we want volunteering to truly drive development, especially in African communities, we must stop romanticizing sacrifice and start building systems that work for people and communities. I’d love to hear your thoughts: What do you think makes volunteers stay, or leave? #Volunteering #YouthDevelopment #CommunityImpact #SocialGood

🤝 The Hidden Benefits of Volunteering: What You Gain by Giving Back Volunteering is often talked about in terms of giving back. How it strengthens communities, supports causes, and makes the world a better place. While this is absolutely true, there’s another side of volunteering that deserves just as much attention: what it gives back to you. In her latest article for UNYA Denmark, Maja Christiansen Cawthra explores the often-overlooked personal benefits of volunteering — from building meaningful connections and strengthening your CV, to developing new skills, boosting well-being, and growing beyond your comfort zone. 👉 Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/eVE7Renx #Volunteering #YouthEngagement #UNYA #PersonalDevelopment

When opportunities take time to materialize, volunteering can be worth considering, especially during job loss or periods of limited employment. This may not be a smart move to some, but volunteering helps one stay active during employment gaps, learn new skills, and prepare for the next opportunity. Sometimes growth happens while serving. #Volunteering #LearningMindset
