📢 📢 📢 Detection of Degraded Star Observation Using Singular Values for Improved Attitude Determination 🧑🔬: Kiduck Kim 🏫:Korea Aerospace Research Institute 👓:This study introduces an innovative approach aimed at enhancing the accuracy of attitude determination through the computation of star observation quality. The proposed algorithm stems from the inherent invariance of singular values under attitude transformations, leveraging the concept of assessing error magnitude through the deviation of singular values. Quantization becomes imperative to employ this error magnitude as a weighting factor within the attitude determination process. To fulfill this purpose, this study applies p-value hypothesis testing to calculate quantized error levels. Simulation results validate that the calculated weights derived from the proposed algorithm lead to a discernible enhancement in attitude determination performance. 👉:https://lnkd.in/gPzMay3W

✨ Baltic Photonics 2025 — Panel Reflections ✨ I had the honour to moderate the panel “Photonics, Space & Defence — Building the Next Generation of Innovation”. With an outstanding group of panelists: Edvinas Kerza — Managing Partner, ScaleWolf Augustinas Lubys — Head of Business Development & Marketing, Kongsberg NanoAvionics @Laurence Cooper — Product Development & Process Manager, Fibercore Antanas Laurutis — CEO, Altechna 💡 What we concluded together: 1️⃣ Europe’s funding model must change — the US builds world-changing companies, while the EU too often builds long projects. 2️⃣ Laser technology is crucial for defence, and Lithuania’s strong photonics ecosystem has huge untapped potential. Aktyvus Photonics and Astrolight is leading the way. 3️⃣ Defence primes play a crucial role — and we need to better understand how to work with them. 4️⃣ Our mindset is shifting: from a comfortable status quo to the recognition that we must prepare and invest seriously in defence. 5️⃣ Building space and defence tech is tough, but today there are more funding instruments and opportunities than ever before. It was a frank and inspiring conversation — and a reminder that photonics is not just science, but a strategic enabler of Europe’s security and sovereignty. 🙏 Big thanks to the Toolas - Laser Micromachining Cluster for bringing together such a strong community and making Baltic Photonics 2025 possible. #BalticPhotonics2025 #Photonics #DefenceInnovation #DualUse #BROSWARM #SpaceTech

China has successfully tested its new vacuum maglev train inside a 2-kilometer tube in Shanxi province. The system, developed by North University of China and the China Aerospace Science and Industry Corporation, uses magnetic levitation inside a low-vacuum tunnel to reduce air resistance. Researchers confirmed stable levitation and control during the trial. The train is designed to reach speeds of up to 1000 kilometers per hour, faster than a commercial airplane. Although the latest test did not reach that top speed, it proved the technology works. China plans to expand the system for longer routes in the future, potentially transforming national travel.
