So, lets talk about galleys for a moment. Because yes, galleys still exist and authors still have to read them. They're just digital now. Proofing galleys is really important because: 1. It's another opportunity to spot typos. Of course we will spot them two minutes after publication. 2. Sometimes your layout person will miss a PDF conversion issue. If its a major issue (little squares everywhere), they'll see it. But if you use cliché once in a book and the é turns into a little square? Might not be noticed. 3. If there are illustrations and such, authors should be happy with where they've been inserted, especially informative images. 4. You can check internal and external links if it's going to be an ebook or online. Not every publisher sends galleys to the author. I wish they all did. I usually do find one typo in a story ;). And its the first chance to see your story laid out and ready for print, and that can feel good whether it's the first time or the 1000th. #FreelanceEditor #TipsForPublishers

How long does a book layout actually take? Many authors expect interior layout to take weeks, sometimes even months. In reality, once everything is ready, the first layout can move surprisingly fast. From my experience: ➡️ A fiction book with simple chapter openers can often be laid out in about a day. ➡️ A typical nonfiction or business book with images, lists, tables, and footnotes usually takes around 2–5 days, depending on length and complexity. ➡️ Image-heavy books (heavily illustrated nonfiction) may take 7–15 days, also depending on length and complexity. These estimates refer to the first layout. Reviews, revisions, and final adjustments take additional time. What often slows projects down is not the layout itself, but the preparation before it begins – making sure the manuscript has been proofread, images are supplied, and the design has been approved. Once those pieces are in place, the pages tend to fall into place much faster than most authors expect. What has been your experience with book layout timelines? #BookDesign #BookLayout #BookPublishing #BookCoaching

The book spine isn’t just a strip of binding; it’s the backbone of the entire book. It connects the covers, holds the text block together, and ensures pages stay aligned. A well-designed spine does more than provide durability and usability. It also plays a crucial role in marketing; standing tall on a shelf, catching a reader’s eye, and inviting them to pick the book up. Getting the spine width right (based on page count and paper thickness) is critical, especially for paperbacks and hardcovers. Too narrow, and pages loosen; too wide, and the book looks awkward. In short: the spine is where structure meets storytelling. #BookPublishing #BookSpine Image Copyright: Angelina Sterling

Been wanting to talk about this. The relationship between: ✅ line length ✅ text size ✅ and leading— the distance between lines.. Is what makes a book easy to read, or hard to read. ANY basic study of typesetting will reveal a simple fact: AS LINE LENGTH GROWS, SO MUST POINT SIZE AND LEADING KEEP PACE. If designers refuse to study this relationship.. If authors refuse to hire designers who understand this relationship… Books will continue to contain dense walls of text that are difficult to read. If your book is important to you, put it in the hands of a designer who knows how to set type.

Tip 6: Why Formatting Can Make or Break Your Book Formatting is more than margins and fonts; it’s how your story feels on the page. Readers might not consciously notice perfect spacing, paragraph breaks, or layout balance, but they instantly sense when something looks off. A clean, well-designed book layout builds credibility, enhances readability, and shows respect for your audience. Whether you’re self-publishing or working with a professional designer, investing in formatting is investing in your reputation as an author. Learn how thoughtful design choices can elevate your words and turn a simple manuscript into a professional, polished reading experience.

If your headings are inconsistent, your book feels disorganized even if the content is good. That's where hierarchy comes in. Hierarchy in formatting means showing readers what matters most, second most, and third most visually. Here's what that looks like in practice: • Chapter titles should stand out clearly • Subheadings should be distinct but smaller • Body text should be consistent throughout • Spacing should naturally separate sections When everything looks the same size and weight, readers get lost. Good formatting guides the eye. It tells the reader: "This is a new section." "This is important." "This supports the main idea." Hierarchy isn't decoration. It's navigation. Have you ever picked up a book where every heading looked identical? You probably put it down faster than you expected not because the writing was bad, but because your brain couldn't find its footing. That's the silent power of formatting. Readers may never notice when it's done right. But they always feel it when it's done wrong. #BookFormatting #eBookDesign #SelfPublishing #PublishingTips #AuthorsOfLinkedIn #DigitalPublishing

Before you request a book design quote, there are a few important questions to consider. Book design pricing is not one-size-fits-all. The scope of your project depends on factors that shape both the creative process and the final files. For example: • What are your publishing goals? • Will you publish in print, ebook, or both? • What platform will you use (KDP, IngramSpark, etc.)? • What is your manuscript’s word count and structure? • Does your book include multiple heading levels, images, charts, or graphics? • Have editing and proofreading been completed? Each of these details affects the design timeline, the complexity of layout, and the accuracy of a quote. Preparing this information in advance allows your designer to provide a realistic estimate and helps prevent unexpected costs later. I’ve written a detailed guide outlining exactly what to gather before requesting a design quote. You can read it here: https://lnkd.in/eXnsBNyN A clear beginning creates a smoother creative process and a stronger final book. ============== About me: 👋 I’m Michelle, a book designer with more than two decades of experience helping authors shape their stories into polished, professional books. If your book only looks good on your laptop, you have a formatting problem. Many authors format their manuscript, scroll through it once, and assume it's ready. But eBooks are not static. They adjust to: • Different screen sizes • Different devices • Reader-selected font sizes If your file isn't structured properly, the layout can shift after upload. Spacing breaks. Images move. Headings lose hierarchy. Formatting isn't about how it looks on your screen. It's about how it behaves everywhere else. Have you ever uploaded a book and noticed unexpected changes? #SelfPublishing #BookFormatting #eBookDesign #AuthorsOfLinkedIn #IndieAuthor #PublishingTips

Professional formatting might seem like a small detail, but it can change how your book is received. When your manuscript is neatly organised, visually appealing, and easy to navigate, readers feel respected and engaged from the first page. This isn't just about aesthetics—it's about improving clarity and flow, which helps your story shine without distractions. For example, consistent chapter headings, well-spaced paragraphs, and a thoughtfully chosen font can make a surprising difference. One of our recent clients saw a notable increase in positive reader feedback simply by refining these elements before publishing. This means your message reaches your audience with the professionalism it deserves, boosting your credibility as an author and encouraging readers to keep turning pages. Have you ever thought about how your book's formatting might be affecting your reader's experience? What aspects of formatting do you find most challenging?
