MDPI’s renewed flat-fee agreement with the Universidad Católica de Valencia San Vicente Mártir (UCV) reflects continued institutional support for Open Access publishing. As members of MDPI’s IOAP program, UCV authors benefit from increased visibility and accessibility, ensuring scholarly outputs from Spain are shared widely and without barriers. We’re delighted to release the first of a series of empirically grounded reports. A joint report from RSVP and the UKCGE, authored by Professor Stan Taylor, 𝘚𝘶𝘱𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘙𝘦𝘴𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘤𝘩 𝘚𝘶𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘷𝘪𝘴𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘗𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘦: 𝘢 𝘳𝘦𝘷𝘪𝘦𝘸 𝘰𝘧 𝘜𝘒 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘷𝘪𝘴𝘪𝘰𝘯 uses available data from 149 research degree awarding institutions in the UK. It builds on the 2018 𝘌𝘭𝘪𝘨𝘪𝘣𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘵𝘰 𝘚𝘶𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘷𝘪𝘴𝘦: 𝘢 𝘴𝘵𝘶𝘥𝘺 𝘰𝘧 𝘜𝘒 𝘐𝘯𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘵𝘶𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴 and provides a snapshot of the current professional development provision for, and reward and recognition of, supervisory practice. The report concludes by recommending that institutions review the duration and content of their development programmes, better to reflect the complex nature of modern research supervision. ✏️ Amending the Scientific Record: Corrections and Retractions 📝 Published articles are viewed as the final, most reliable output of a research endeavour; however, even after publication, errors and oversights may come to light and these must be addressed. A brief comment for those asking about a full waiver of publication fees while being affiliated with a country that does not belong to Group A. For example, Iraq belongs to Group B, for which most journals offer a 50% discount, except for a limited number of journals that grant a full waiver of fees. For collaborative papers between researchers from Group B and researchers from Group A, it is preferable that the corresponding author be from Group A, since the waiver decision depends entirely on the corresponding author and is therefore more guaranteed. If the corresponding author is not from Group A, the decision will depend on the journal’s discretion, either granting a waiver or only a partial discount. Although this practice is not explicitly stated in the published policies, it is unfortunately the approach followed by many journals. The explicit wording of these policies requires clarification of which author the waiver policy applies to. I quote here the exact text: “It should be clear to which author the waiver policy applies, for example the corresponding author only, the co-authors and/or the first author.” Therefore, to ensure a full waiver without delay, the corresponding author should be from Group A.
