If you worked in fintech in 2021, you'll remember the fintech world went through a MAJOR identity crisis. Many companies tried to rebrand themselves as software businesses instead of banks. Take SoFi's investor presentation before going public via SPAC. They compared themselves to the biggest SaaS companies out there. Not a single mention of other fintechs or banks. This wasn't just a marketing ploy - fintech founders truly believed they were building software companies, not financial services companies. But this belief led to some dangerous missteps ❌ Fintech companies pushed banks to take excessive risks. Banks accepted these risks to win deals. Goldman Sachs lost money on Apple Card. I've met plenty of fintech founders who are laser-focused on pure SaaS metrics that don't quite fit. They obsess over things like CAC. Sure, you can slash acquisition costs easily enough. But what about all the compliance issues that come with that? We got caught up in the 'tech' hype and lost sight of the 'financial' part. It might be time to refocus on the core financial aspects where it makes sense. The 2021 fintech identity crisis might be over, but we're still dealing with the fallout today.
