I’ve seen this firsthand: the challenge is rarely a lack of expertise. It is turning expert knowledge into clear, teachable learning that can be delivered consistently across coaches and groups.
SMEs don’t give clean content. They give expertise in knots 🧶 Most learning fails not because of poor tools… but because raw SME content is never transformed. Here’s what actually happens behind every effective e-learning course 👇 🧠 SME content arrives messy, dense, and overloaded 🪢 Instructional designers untangle the content by making sense of intent 🎯 Learning objectives bring clarity, focus, and learner outcomes 🧵 Everything is then braided into an e-learning course that is structured and engaging This is the real value of instructional design. Not converting slides. Not decorating content. But turning expert knowledge into learner-centered experiences 🚀 If you’ve ever worked with SMEs, this will feel very familiar 😉 💬 Which step do you think is the hardest for instructional designers? #instructionaldesign #elearning #learningdesign #idcommunity

I love working with subject matter experts and turning their content into a course. For me, the biggest challenges are telling the SME that not everything they gave me in step 1 is going to be included and convincing them that telling isn’t the same as training. Learners need activities, time for reflection, the chance to try new things and make mistakes in a safe environment.

This diagram is perfect. SMEs know all the tribal knowledge and are amazing. But that doesn’t necessarily translate into learning objectives or actual end user training.

One common mistake in instructional design is jumping straight into content creation. Before designing anything, pause and ask: • What exactly is not working right now? • Who is struggling? • What are they doing incorrectly or inefficiently? Sometimes people don’t struggle because they don’t know enough. The real problem is a broken process, unclear expectations, or simply not having the right tools. If we give training without understanding the real issue, we’re just sharing information not creating improvement. Good instructional design doesn’t start with building slides. It starts with understanding the problem first. Because you can’t fix what you haven’t diagnosed. #InstructionalDesign #LearningAndDevelopment #ELearning #LearningExperienceDesign #WorkplaceLearning

✨ What is Instructional Design? And Why Does It Matter? Instructional Design is the systematic process of creating meaningful and effective learning experiences. It’s not just about creating slides or content — it’s about understanding learners, defining clear objectives, and designing learning solutions that truly improve performance. As instructional designers, we: 🔎 Analyze learning needs 🎯 Define measurable objectives 🧠 Design engaging learning experiences 🛠 Develop interactive content 📊 Evaluate learning effectiveness 💡 How does it help people? ✔️ Makes learning engaging and interactive ✔️ Improves knowledge retention ✔️ Builds skills and confidence ✔️ Enhances workplace performance When learning is designed with purpose, it doesn’t just inform — it transforms. Instructional Design is where creativity meets strategy to create learning that actually works. #InstructionalDesign #LearningAndDevelopment #Elearning #CorporateTraining #ADDIE #LearningExperienceDesign

A (very realistic) day in the life of an instructional designer. Some people think instructional design is mostly about building courses. In reality, it’s a mix of: • making sense of complex content • translating SME expertise into learning experiences • navigating feedback • and occasionally discovering that the “existing content” is an 87-page PDF. And of course, every workday also includes a mandatory meeting with my most reliable colleague. 🐶 Mike. #InstructionalDesign #LearningDesign #CorporateLearning #ELearning #LearningExperience #LXD

🧠 As instructional designers, we need to ensure that we understand the problem that we are solving. If your client needs an eLearning course, do you just create it without understanding why? What problem are they actually trying to solve? ⠀ ⠀ The same goes for all situations in life. In my recent posts, I came across many comments stating Instructional Design (ID) field is getting saturated. Let's discuss on this topic today. So, why is the ID field getting saturated? Here is my take. This may sound a bit harsh, but this is fact. I have observed many individuals who: 1) Create one course in Articulate Storyline 2) Complete a short certification from platforms like Udemy or Coursera 3) Transition from eLearning operations or teaching roles And then start calling themselves Instructional Designers. However, ID demands far more than just building content in an authoring tool. A strong Instructional Designer must be capable of: 1) Conducting Training Needs Analysis (TNA) 2) Paying strong attention to detail 3) Chunking and structuring complex content effectively 4) Demonstrating a strong grasp of written and verbal English 5) Dealing with ambiguity confidently 6) Applying adult learning principles appropriately 7) Understanding the real business problem Planning and structuring complete curricula 8) Explaining the “why” before the “how” Precizely, certifications alone do not make someone an expert Instructional Designer. They only provide theoretical knowledge. The real ID skills develop when you apply that knowledge in real-life and gain experience. In short, the real capability comes from: 1) Experience 2) Exposure to complex projects 3) Continuous learning 4) And time spent refining the craft Mature Instructional Designers are built over time — not overnight. #InstructionalDesign #LearningAndDevelopment #CareerGrowth #LNDProfessionals #ProfessionalDevelopment

Great Instructional Designers don’t just build courses… they master three powerful habits. 🐒 Most people think Instructional Design is about tools, slides, and authoring software. It’s not. Great instructional designers consistently practice three core behaviors: 👀 See Beyond Spot learning opportunities others miss and design with long-term learning impact in mind. 🎧 Hear Within Understand learner frustrations, motivations, and hidden barriers before designing learning experiences. 📣 Speak to Transform Deliver knowledge in a way that drives behavior change, engagement, and real performance improvement. When these three abilities come together, learning stops being content delivery and becomes transformation. That’s when instructional design, eLearning design, and learning experience design truly create impact. Which one do you think is the most underrated skill in instructional design today? 👇 #instructionaldesign #elearningdesign #learningexperience #learninganddevelopment #elearning
