I’ve launched a new publication on Medium called Beneath the System. It’s a home for writing that reveals how systems really work—not the official version, but the lived one. I’m opening it to submissions from writers who examine: • the gap between how work is imagined and how it’s done • invisible labour and the load it carries • drift, failure modes, and unintended consequences • upstream decisions and downstream effects • the human cost of systems that stop making sense If your work helps people see a system more clearly, I’d love to read it. Submission guidelines: https://lnkd.in/ezzXztYe Clarity exposes friction. Let’s make the invisible visible. https://lnkd.in/eJX6f5_F

Creative practice research has a peer review problem — not because it lacks rigour, but because it does not always fit the system. My article, Articulation as Continuation, argues that peer review for non-screen-based creative practice research needs to move beyond the evaluation of fixed artefacts and engage with articulation as part of the research process itself. Writing, reflection, documentation and dialogue are not supplementary to practice. They are part of how creative research becomes legible, shareable and open to scrutiny. Want better writing? Start with better questions. This free Question Grid helps children move past “What is it?” and into richer ideas like “Why might…?” and “What would happen if…?” so the writing flows more easily.

𝐃𝐢𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰 𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐬 𝐝𝐨𝐧’𝐭 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐫𝐞 𝐩𝐚𝐩𝐞𝐫 𝐛𝐞𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐝𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐭𝐬 𝐟𝐚𝐭𝐞? They read just enough. Enough to judge journal fit. Enough to see if your contribution is clear. Enough to feel if the manuscript is structured and readable. And that’s often enough to decide whether it goes for peer review… or gets rejected early. That’s why “almost ready” is risky. Before you submit, ask yourself: • Is the journal fit immediately clear? • Is your contribution visible in the title and abstract? • Does the structure feel controlled and logical? • Are there any avoidable presentation issues left? If you’re unsure, it’s better to fix it now than lose weeks after submission. 𝑺𝒖𝒃𝒎𝒊𝒔𝒔𝒊𝒐 𝒄𝒐𝒎𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒖𝒑 𝒔𝒐𝒐𝒏? Interdisciplinary research does not always fit neatly within one field, and that can make peer review more complex. The challenge is not about having expertise in every aspect of the manuscript, but about understanding where your expertise applies and where it does not. A thoughtful review focuses on what you can evaluate reliably, communicates boundaries clearly, and supports the editor in making an informed decision. Desk rejection is NOT the same as peer review rejection. #DeskRejection means an editor rejected your manuscript without sending it to external peer review. The term "desk" refers to the editor's desk - the paper never left it. Desk rejection gives you almost nothing to work with, just a generic "not suitable" email. #PeerReviewRejection means external experts read your full paper and identified specific problems. That feedback, while painful, is useful. Which is worse? Neither, really. Desk rejection is faster and less painful. Peer review rejection burns more time but gives you actionable feedback. See comment section for causes of desk rejection. Source: Manusights.com #DeskRejection #PeerReviewRejection #AcademicPublishing #EarlyCareerResearcher

📝 𝐀 𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐥𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐨𝐧 𝐛𝐞𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐟𝐮𝐥 𝐝𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐥𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 & 𝐫𝐞𝐛𝐮𝐭𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐬 I’ve seen good papers struggle—not because of the science, but because of how revisions were handled. A few gentle reminders during article revisions & rebuttals: ✅ 𝐁𝐞 𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥, 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐝𝐞𝐟𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐯𝐞 Explain your reasoning clearly. You don’t need to “win” every point. ✅ 𝐊𝐞𝐞𝐩 𝐫𝐞𝐛𝐮𝐭𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐬 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐬𝐞 Repeating the same argument only creates confusion. Clarity > length. ✅ 𝐃𝐨 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐥𝐞 If something can’t be done, state it transparently as a limitation—with references. ✅ 𝐂𝐡𝐞𝐜𝐤 𝐟𝐢𝐥𝐞𝐬 𝐛𝐞𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐮𝐩𝐥𝐨𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 Anything promised in the rebuttal must appear in the revised manuscript. ✅ 𝐑𝐚𝐰 𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐚 𝐫𝐞𝐪𝐮𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐧𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐥 They’re a routine part of editorial quality checks—no need to panic. Thoughtful revisions build trust and make the review process smoother for everyone. 🔬✍️ Let’s review and revise with care. #AcademicPublishing #PeerReview #ManuscriptRevision #ResearchIntegrity #ScholarlyCommunication #EarlyCareerResearchers #ScienceEditing

Strong literary analysis moves beyond a simply understanding of what happens in a text. Move from: • Your point • To evidence (an supporting example) • To analysis of techniques (devices) • To emotional engagement (reader impact) *optional • To thematic understanding (interpretation) • To evaluation of authorial purpose (evaluation) *not every observation needs to include an effect
