Only days ago, #ClawdBot became #MoltBot became #OpenClaw, and is the latest example of meteoric viral disruption: what began in late 2025 as a personal productivity project and may turn into the first one-person, billion-dollar company on the planet. Peter Steinberger's creation lets users make and rule a collective of semi-autonomous #AI agents which perform a variety of tasks, all managed from one or more commercial or open source communications tools such as WhatsApp, Discord, Slack and Telegram. The immediate results have been spectacular and frightening at the same time. OpenAI's Sam Altman announced to global interest on Sunday that OpenClaw is joining the AI famous for ChatGPT and launching the public Artificial Intelligence gold rush amid widespread fear of economic disruption. Any flies on the wall over at Google or Anthropic reporting reactions to this latest twist in the mind warp that is the evolving story of AI in our lives and futures?

"When Big Tech sends you a cease-and-desist, you don't quit. You 'molt'." The most exciting (and controversial) open-source AI project of 2026 just got a forced rebrand. You know it as Clawdbot, the local-first "Personal OS" that went from 5,000 to 60,000 GitHub stars in a flash, letting you control your computer via WhatsApp. Well, Anthropic (makers of Claude) politely asked them to change their name. And instead of shutting down, the developers leaned into it. Meet Moltbot 🦞 – because like a lobster, it shed its old shell to grow bigger and stronger. Part 1 of 2: OpenAI did not hire Peter (OpenClaw creator) for his code. What happened: ➤ Peter Steinberger built OpenClaw as a side project, using OpenAI's Codex. ➤ Despite numerous security risks, people installed it on their machines or VPS. ➤ It enabled people to manage emails, calendars, morning briefs, etc. using WhatsApp & Telegram. ➤ It showed that the market is super hungry for such Agentic capabilities. What OpenAI gained from this: ➤ OpenAI current stack includes: ChatGPT (for conversation), Codex (for coding), and AgentKit (for agentic workflow management). The missing piece was persistent memory. ➤ OpenClaw has persistent memory that remembers context over time and has already been stress-tested by developer community. ➤ OpenAI gets access to an open-source community inventing use cases of AI Agents which even Peter never imagined. You can sense where OpenAI is moving with this. Another signal which came few weeks back, Meta acquired Manus AI. It seems the focus of AI labs is shifting from Chatbots to Agents. But OpenClaw wasn’t a random experiment. It was early adopters stress-testing Claude in the real world. And early adopters matter. They’re the ones who: • experiment first • recommend tools internally • influence buying decisions • drive ecosystem momentum At the same time, OpenAI is pushing Codex and agent tooling across ChatGPT plans and APIs...effectively saying: “𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱.” Two very different bets. 🔒 Tighten access and control risk. 🚀 Enable builders and grow the network. God damn, stop with this nonsense. OpenAI can’t “buy” OpenClaw. It’s MIT licensed. They hired a maintainer. That’s not the same as acquiring or owning the project. MIT-licensed software cannot be taken private. Anyone can fork it, self-host it, modify it, and build their own version. That’s the whole point of open source. OpenClaw is to AI employees what WordPress (the open-source, self-hosted version) was to blogging. The power isn’t centralized — it’s in the ecosystem. And that’s what makes this interesting. What OpenAI bought is 100% access to maintainer of the project and his cooperation. But if they do not do it right, community will fork it. They do not own it, they have better access to it. 2026 might actually become the year of the AI employee. Funny that this kicked off in January.
