I had a fascinating conversation recently with the Head of a Systematic Energy Trading desk at what is arguably one of the world’s highest performing and secretive Quant Trading firms. I asked him how they’d managed to deliver such strong performance in the past 18 months during what has actually been a very difficult period across a lot of energy markets. His answer was interesting. Not “better models”. Not “more PhDs”. Not some magic black box. He put it down to three things: Cutting-edge infrastructure Exceptional execution The ability to identify large asymmetric opportunities before the broader market. It’s another reminder that in today’s world of energy trading, infrastructure and execution are increasingly becoming the edge. Obviously I asked whether he’d ever come on the NordSearch Podcast. He was actually open to it but given his Firm had only recently let him have a LI profile it was very unlikely he’d be able to go on a podcast!
