The Tools Are Easy, The Thinking Is Hard I’ve reviewed a lot of courses from people who are really good at Storyline. Complex interactions, custom variables, technically impressive builds. You can tell they’ve invested time mastering the tool. But here’s what keeps happening: learners spend more mental energy figuring out the navigation than actually learning the content. The course becomes a demonstration of Storyline proficiency instead of a solution to a learning problem. When I give feedback, it usually comes down to the same thing: the learning objectives aren’t being met. The technical execution is solid, but the instructional design isn’t there. Tool proficiency is easy to see and measure. Good instructional design thinking is harder to spot, but it’s what actually matters. Here’s what ID thinking actually asks: Does this interaction serve the learning, or am I just showing off what the tool can do? Complex branching scenarios are impressive, but if learners don’t need to practice decision-making, a simple example works better. The question isn’t “can I build this?” It’s “does the learner need this?” When learners spend mental energy figuring out navigation, they’re not focused on the content. I’ve watched people click around trying to find the next button or understand how custom interactions work while completely missing the point of the lesson. And here’s the most basic question that gets lost: Am I meeting the learning objectives? Fancy interactions don’t matter if learners walk away not understanding what they needed to learn. The reality: You can learn any tool. Storyline, Vyond, Captivate, Rise - they all have learning curves, but they’re learnable. Give someone a few months and access to tutorials, and they’ll figure it out. What’s harder is knowing when to use which approach, understanding what learners actually need, and designing experiences that work instead of just look impressive. I’ve seen people with basic tool skills create effective training because they understood their audience. And I’ve seen people with advanced technical skills create beautiful courses that don’t teach anything. The tool is the vehicle. The thinking is what gets learners where they need to go. Happy Monday! This week I want to talk about content transparency in training. We (instructional designers) create a lot of assets with AI, videos, job aids, quizzes, microlearning, etc. Learners deserve to know what was AI-generated and what was edited. Teams also need a clear audit trail. This is not about calling people out. This is about accountability. Knowing how and where resources are allocating, so projects and teams can plan and budget. Here is a simple plan you can start today: 1. Label content origins. Add a short note on each asset that says if AI helped create or edit it. 2. Keep edit history. Track who reviewed, who approved, and when. 3. Use metadata. Store version, source files, and prompts with the asset. 4. Flag high-risk items. Mark assessments and compliance modules for extra review. 5. Document accessibility. Record WCAG checks with every release. This builds trust. It protects your learners and your brand.
