Representation That Doesn’t Relate By Raymond Alford Managing Partner — Realford Holdings & Trust Founder — Pathways to Prosperity Initiative Across America, we talk a lot about representation. But we rarely ask a critical question: Does the representation actually relate to the economic interests of Black business owners? Too often, the individuals positioned as “voices” for Black communities are not business owners, employers, developers, investors, or policy strategists. They come from cultural influence, not economic experience. And the result is predictable: symbolic representation instead of economic representation. Why Black Business Owners Must Be Engaged in Politics Regardless of party affiliation, Black entrepreneurs must participate in policy-shaping environments. Wealth is influenced heavily by: • Tax codes • Contracting opportunities • Economic incentives • Workforce programs • Development approvals • Federal and state appropriations If we do not advocate in these spaces, others will make decisions that determine our access to capital, contracts, and economic mobility. --- Why I Vote Republican as a Business Owner This is not about party identity — it is about policy alignment. For Realford Holdings, our most accelerated periods of growth occurred during Republican presidencies, due to: • Lower taxes • Business-friendly regulatory structures • Stronger incentives for development • Favorable private investment conditions My focus is simple: Vote for the policies that build generational wealth. The Path Forward Black America needs more economic representation at the policy level: business owners, contractors, developers, financial leaders, and investors. Cultural representation is valuable. Economic representation is transformative. Representation is only effective when it relates to our economic reality. This is the principle behind the Pathways to Prosperity Initiative and the future of Realford Holdings.

John Cromwell became the first black CPA in America by passing the exam in 1921 in New Hampshire, which was the only state to drop the experience requirement. The other states had a work requirement, yet no CPA firm would hire a black accountant at the time; lingering discrimination may explain why only 2% of the CPAs today are black, compared to 4.5% of the attorneys & 5.7% of doctors.    Discrimination at the BIG firms today is not just about race, 77% of partners are male versus 23% female, which indicates a gender glass ceiling at the top. So what’s the AICPA doing about it? Nothing; & there’s a bias gap in GAAP. Cromwell must have been one tough dude to break into the profession back in the 1920s. However, a turning point is coming; there are currently more female accounting students today than male. Mary Wylie became the first black woman to be a CPA in 1943. Starting out in her basement because no white firm would hire her, she worked until age 75 with 30 CPAs working for her at the end. She also managed to have 5 children and live to age 99. That was sure a balancing act. The point is: if Cromwell & Wylie could do it, so can women break the glass ceiling and run a big 4; Yet…. EY, KPMG, Deloitte & PWC all have male CEOs…. and none of them are black.

🌟Monthly Spotlights🌟   Running two days behind on this one, but better late than never!   A few weeks ago, we delivered a session with one of our partner law firms, who were joining our Qualified Black Lawyers Matter Mentoring (QBLMM) programme for the first time.   QBLMM is designed to connect Black lawyers (mentees) with senior lawyers/legal professionals (mentors) in a 'two-way street' mentoring approach. Mentees gain guidance and career support, while mentors gain insight and practical DEI learning.   During the session, I shared some themes we hear from Black lawyers when they seek mentorship through QBLMM. As circled, some reoccur more frequently than others, and that in itself tells a story.   And you might be wondering, why does this matter?   Black Lawyers Matter has historically focused on entry, and we remain committed to getting Black aspiring lawyers through the door. Through ongoing conversations within our community another need became clear:   It's not only about getting through the door - it's about progressing into senior leadership.   At the same time, we continue to see a pattern in our conversations with law firms and in-house legal teams - retention remains a challenge.   So a major focus for us (and you'll see this in lots of our work through 2026!) is on strengthening this in multiple ways. Despite growing recognition of the importance of Black entrepreneurship, Black-owned businesses remain underrepresented in high-growth sectors and undercapitalized relative to their peers. To address this issue, community-based financial institutions (CDFIs) have emerged as critical intermediaries. But are they working? On November 12, The Brookings Institution will host an event to discuss the potential of CDFIs in expanding Black business ownership, and how doing so can drive greater economic security and increased well-being across geography and race. Part 1 Legacy-black.com :Closing the Wealth Gap and Changing the Trajectory of Our Community The statistic alone is enough to stop you in your tracks: £23,700 vs £197,000. That’s the stark difference in median Black household wealth in the UK, compared to the national median. A gap that has generational consequences. A gap that determines access, opportunity, wellbeing, choice — and ultimately, freedom. I was present when Dr. Raphael Sofoluke announced Legacy Black, and the atmosphere in that room was unlike anything I’ve experienced in a long time. It was bold. It was intentional. It was overdue. It was the start of something that could truly reshape the trajectory of Black economic empowerment in the UK. This wasn’t just an announcement. It was a statement of collective ambition. ⸻ A Different Landscape, A Different Reality In the UK, we are a community of around 2.4 million Black people. In the United States, that number is about 48.3 million. That difference matters. It means: • Our market is smaller. • Our representation is thinner. • Our access to capital and influence is more concentrated. • And yes — we often have to work 10 times harder for the same level of visibility, resourcing, or opportunity. And yet — despite the scale difference — we have produced brilliance. Examples of what success can look like: Steven Bartlett Dr. Raphael Sofoluke Entrepreneurs. Investors. Culture-shapers. Change-makers. But we need more. More examples. More models. More pathways. More possibilities. ⸻ Collaboration is the Key — But Not Just Any Collaboration What we now need is more of those examples: more Black entrepreneurs, more access to capital, and more collaboration across our ecosystem. But it’s deeper than that. We need more of us in the rooms where decisions are being made — individuals in positions of influence who genuinely recognise our value. People who see the strategic advantage of the lived experiences, cultural intelligence, perspective and creativity we carry. Our unique qualities are not liabilities to be managed They are assets to be leveraged. This is what happens when we: • Work together • Lift one another up • Collaborate across industries • Intentionally amplify, sponsor and elevate each other This is how we create conscious change that benefits all of us — not just a select few who “make it out”. Excellence Can Be Weaponized I was 26 when I was appointed to the bench. As a young Black judge, my community's mandate for me was clear: "Excellence is the standard." I took it to heart. I wore the suits, followed the law to the letter, and pushed for equitable pay and diverse hiring for my team. But my commitment to excellence wasn't met with respect; it was met with resistance. Hiring clerks that reflected the community? "Why are you hiring just Black clerks?" Ensuring equitable pay? "You’re paying them too much." Obtaining my Masters degree? "Why bother? You’re already a judge." I realized my value was constantly being assessed through a lens of control, not contribution. They wanted my performance, but only within their comfortable confines. They wanted the commodity, not the complete human. This isn't just a legal or racial issue; it's a global professional crisis. Whether you're a CEO, an athlete, a front-line worker, or an artist, ask yourself: Are you being seen, or just used? The Spotlight vs. The Sight: Are you praised for what you can do (the one-handed catch, the profit margin, the late nights), but ignored for who you are (the exhaustion, the ambition, the soul)? Reject The Token: If you are a 'crisp new bill' (high value, high potential), don't accept 'tokens' (misassigned, limited value) in return—in tender or in life. Demand Humanity: Our humanity cannot be secondary to our performance. On the field, in the boardroom, or in the office, we must demand to be seen as whole people—with minds, spirits, and personal lives that matter just as much as our output. We have an abundance to share when we are genuinely seen, not just fracked for our resources. Who’s assigning your value?
