Our ILM Level 5 Certificate in Effective Coaching and Mentoring starts soon, with an online induction next week ahead of the full programme beginning in May. Recently, I was speaking with a college friend who just completed her mandatory coaching hours as part of her Leadership Coaching certification. What stood out wasn’t just the rigor of the process, but her intentional decision to invest in a career coach for herself. That conversation stayed with me. Because even as she learns to coach others, she recognizes the value of being coached. Around the same time, I attended a Coaching Fundamentals program by Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD), beautifully led by Hisham Elsaied, FCIPD, ACC where one idea really stuck: 👉 The difference between curious questions and corrective questions Corrective questions try to fix: “Why didn’t you handle it this way?” Curious questions try to uncover: “What made you approach it that way?” That distinction changed how I think about development conversations. And this is where the difference between coaching and mentoring becomes powerful: Mentoring is experience-led. It’s about guidance, advice, and sharing 'what worked for me.' Coaching is awareness-led. It’s about helping someone find their own answers by asking the right questions. Both are valuable. Starting a new role can be overwhelming — new systems, new faces, and a completely new environment to navigate. As a trainer, I’ve come to realise that I’m often the first point of contact for new starters. That means I’m not just delivering training — I’m shaping first impressions. Being in that position comes with real responsibility. It’s about setting the tone, modelling the right behaviours, and showing what “good” looks like from day one. Whether it’s how we communicate, how we support each other, or how we approach challenges, new starters take those cues from us. This experience has helped me understand what it truly means to be an ambassador for the organisation — representing our values, creating a positive learning environment, and helping others feel confident and supported as they begin their journey.
