I worked with a writer who chose self-publishing from the outset and treated it as a professional process. He invested in proper editing, worked closely on the design, and took the time to understand each step involved. The final book reflected that level of care and it stands comfortably alongside traditionally published titles. I've also seen writers approach self-publishing as a quick 'second best' alternative when traditional publishing did not work out. They rushed the process, skipped key steps and aimed to get the book out as quickly - and as cheaply - as possible. This result only served to reinforce the perception that self-published work is lower quality. The difference is not the publishing method. It's the approach. Is there a book in you that wants to exist? Over the years, I've asked this question to every talented journalist I've worked with, and 99% of the time the answer has been the same. Most say that they want to write a book. Someday. At some point. When there's time. It's a reasonable response when you think of life in our busy world. But what about a perspective shift? [The Process of Book Publishing] for anyone who has thought about writing a book 📖 Since my book was published, I’ve had many conversations with people who have: 1. Always wanted to publish a book 2. Is in the process of writing a book In both cases, a big question mark existed ❓… how does the process of getting a book published work?!? So I decided to write this post, based only on my own experience, however hopefully it can help you or others who are keen to know more about how the world of publishing works. For any authors reading this, please feel free to jump in with your additions in the comments! Every bit of sharing helps! There are 2 main routes in publishing: Self Publishing, or Traditional Publishing. 1️⃣ Self Publishing you do all the writing, editing, designing, pricing and marketing. You pay someone to help in the areas you need, and once done, you pay someone to print it for you. For example, Amazon provides this service. Each country will also have local providers. Higher upfront cost, but you control the process. 2️⃣ Traditional Publishing means a publishing house like Penguin or HarperCollins sponsors your work. It involves pitching your work to them, and may involve securing a literary agent to represent you. Most of the time they would want to see at least a few chapters of your writing, if not the full manuscript. If they decide to publish your work, they have a team that supports the full process of designing, editing, pricing, and will have established relationships with bookstores and distribution channels. They cover the cost of this process and you get paid royalties on book sales. Low or no upfront cost, although they control the process. Depending on what’s important to you, you may feel you lean towards one or the other. I’ll stop here for now as there are a million and one other things I could share.
