Personalisation is a hot topic in L&D. It means different things to different people, but the overall promise is of delivery, learning paths and content tailored for the individual.   Can AI can make this promise real for L&D? Here's a snippet from my interview with Adobe Learning Manager, where we touch on what personalisation means for training's future. It's a really good question, Robin Hoyle. The short answer is "no". From what I see, currently L&D is largely focused on individual learning or (more rarely) organisational capability. These two are important things to pursue, but arguably the fundamental unit of productivity in an organisation is the team. There are interesting vendors doing work on team capability building, but I can't off the top of my head think of any organisation that's focused on team performance outside the armed forces. I would be very happy to hear from anyone engaged in this.

I agree AI promises and, in some (rare) cases delivers, individual personalisation. However, there are some learning interventions which are - and should remain - targeted at the team, building universal capability and a common language. While personalisation may be part of this - tailoring activities at individuals based on specific needs - there is much value in building commonality as a start point. Donald H Taylor have you seen progression to personalised routes built on a foundation of team or departmental capability improvements or a changed performance focus in response to new requirements?

Super interesting - I've been wondering if the purpose of learning at work is to manage career paths and promotions, or if it's to feel better/more confident in a role, if it's for personal development.. It's not linear either because some people will care about their career progression and others just want to learn different skills to feel that they're growing, and I think understand WHY people want to learn is also personalisation!

Generally speaking, I am not sure the L&D departments mastered the idea of AI in their offering and value proposition to the wider organisations.

Donald H Taylor Personalisation really comes to life when it supports skill-based growth, across both linear and horizontal paths, and gives individuals real choice in shaping their development. AI can enable this by expanding visibility and helping people make informed, personal decisions about where to grow next.

Great question and a timely one. AI can make personalisation real in L&D, but only when it’s used to simplify learning journeys and respond to real learner needs, not just to customise content for its own sake.

I love this discussion on how AI systems can help employees map their next move and learn how to do it. Thank you Donald and Justin!
