Retention gaps don't close by accident. Students who completed a five-week academic support course persisted to the next term at meaningfully higher rates than their matched peers, even after controlling for prior GPA, financial aid status, and first-generation status. A finding worth citing in your next literature review. Worth bringing to your next program review. Anna Gavrilova, PhD & Jill D. Jenson at the University of Minnesota Duluth show what's possible when short-term, research-based support is done right. Teaching forces clarity. It challenges you to explain ideas simply — which is often far harder than understanding them yourself. It builds confidence in your voice, your knowledge, and your presence. But more than that, it changes how you see your research. You stop thinking only as a research candidate … and start thinking as a contributor to knowledge. As someone shaping how others learn, question, and understand. You develop as a scholar. You won’t get everything right. None of us do! But every class, every conversation, every question asked of you … sharpens your thinking and strengthens your academic identity. So if the opportunity comes — even in small ways — take it. Teaching doesn’t take away from your doctorate. It adds to who you become because of it. #PositivePhD #DoctoralJourney #AcademicGrowth #PhDLife #TeachingAndLearning #TheThirdDegree

The scholarship essay problem isn't lack of effort. It's lack of specificity. Students write about dreams. Scholarship committees want evidence. The difference between a $500 award and a $10K award often comes down to one thing: does the essay prove the student's commitment through concrete examples? We're seeing patterns in what wins. Generic aspirations don't. Specific stories do. How are you helping students move from 'I care about X' to 'Here's exactly what I've done about X'? #SchoolCounselors #EducationEquity #CollegeReadiness #AIinEducation

“Stories are not a waste of time.” In education, we often focus on measurable outcomes. But some of the most impactful learning happens through stories. Books like "Where the Mountain Meets the Moon" help students develop cultural awareness, empathy, and critical thinking in ways traditional methods often cannot. It’s a powerful reminder of the role literature plays in a well-rounded education. Most families think college applications start senior year. They don’t. The strongest applications are built over time. Through the classes students choose, the activities they commit to, and the direction they start shaping early. Because when it’s time to write the essay, the story is already there. If your student is in high school, now is the time to think ahead. Read more: https://lnkd.in/exEtf7sp #CollegePlanning #HighSchoolSuccess #CollegeAdmissions #ParentTips #StudentSuccess

One of the most effective college essay techniques is what I call “emotional immediacy.” This Cornell-admitted student opens her essay with a single vulnerable confession: “I don’t know how to ride a bike.” No exposition. No explanation. No résumé summary. Just tension. From an admissions psychology perspective, this works because it instantly creates narrative curiosity while signaling emotional honesty. As the essay unfolds, we learn she is writing about her father’s brain tumor, multiple surgeries, and the quiet role reversal that occurred within their relationship. What made this essay exceptional was not the hardship itself. It was the restraint. She didn’t perform resilience. She revealed love. That distinction matters. Selective colleges read thousands of essays filled with accomplishments, adversity, and polished messaging. The essays that stand out are often the ones that create emotional specificity and trust. The best student writing feels observed, not manufactured. That’s what this student achieved, and it helped her earn admission to Cornell. If you’re helping students prepare essays for highly selective colleges, remember: Personal always beats performative. Let’s Take Science… Options Will Remain Open. A parent told me this last week. “Sir, we’ll take Science for now. We can decide later.” Nothing change since 19 century Sounds safe. Logical. But here’s what usually happens next. Within 3–4 months: -Heavy syllabus. -Coaching pressure. -Constant tests. And one silent question: “Do I even like this?” But now, changing feels difficult. Because time is invested. Money is invested. Ego is invested. So the student continues. Not with clarity. But with pressure. Let’s be very real. Science is a great stream. But it’s not a “safe option.” It’s a demanding commitment. It requires: • Strong subject interest • Consistency for 2–3 years • Ability to handle pressure Without this, it becomes exhausting. Most families don’t make a wrong decision. They make an early decision without enough thinking. And later, they try to adjust around it. If your child is about to choose a stream, pause and ask: “Are we choosing this… or just delaying the real decision?” That one question can save 2 years. 📩 If you’re currently deciding stream and want clarity before committing, message “STREAM” I’ll share a simple way to evaluate the right fit. #CareerGuidance #Grade10 #Parenting #StudentLife
