The Senate Armed Services Committee wants the Department of Defense to examine its use of cyber power beyond the forces of U.S. Cyber Command. A provision in the committee’s version of the annual defense policy bill, of which an executive summary was released Friday, would require the secretary of defense to review future force employment concepts for cyber operations. The full text of the bill has yet to be released. Senior congressional officials that briefed reporters Friday pointed to the fact that to date, cyber operations and forces have largely been focused on the strategic level. More and more, there are other avenues to conduct digital actions, officials said, to include tactical cyber. https://lnkd.in/eu2HiZcq

SAIC chief executive Toni Townes-Whitley says the biggest threat to national security isn’t technology, adversaries, or resources—it’s the fact that much of U.S. defense strategy has become anachronistic. “Those areas where we had large seas or oceans between us and adversaries are no longer the boundary conditions that we have experienced,” she said at the #FortuneMPW Summit, noting that the U.S. has adversaries that operate in “domains” beyond land, sea, and air, such as cyber and space. She had a message: The U.S. has more work to do to successfully defend against enemies like this. Read more: https://lnkd.in/eztjhjPm

Russian-linked hackers claim to have stolen and dumped data from eight UK Ministry of Defence sites in what appears to be one of the most serious cyber breaches to hit Britain’s military network in years. The breach, first reported by the Mail on Sunday, has been claimed by the “Lynx” ransomware gang, a relatively new cybercriminal outfit believed to operate out of Russia that emerged in 2024 as a likely successor to the notorious “INC” ransomware operation. In a post on its dark web leak site, seen by Resilience Media, the group claims to have quietly exfiltrated “roughly 4TB of data” from eight RAF and Royal Navy bases in September, including RAF Lakenheath in Suffolk, where the US Air Force’s F-35 jets are based. **Pentagon Watchdog Completes Probe into Defense Secretary Hegseth’s Use of Signal for Sensitive Ops** Please read the original article at https://lnkd.in/db23AiWs The Pentagon’s Inspector General has concluded its review of Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s use of the encrypted messaging app Signal to discuss military operations, according to sources familiar with the investigation. The review was launched after reports revealed Hegseth used private group chats—including ones involving family and his lawyer—to share sensitive details of U.S. military strikes in Yemen against the Houthi rebel group. Investigators examined whether classified information marked "Secret/NOFORN" was improperly disclosed, including from a U.S. Central Command document. While Hegseth has classification authority, it remains unclear if he officially declassified the material before sharing it. Hegseth and his office strongly deny wrongdoing, calling the investigation politically motivated. The Inspector General has submitted findings to Hegseth for comment—a standard procedure—before it presents a final report to Congress. The Pentagon has not commented on details due to ongoing policy. Cybersecurity professionals should note the potential national security implications of using unapproved communication platforms for classified information, as insider threat vectors and policy non-compliance remain critical areas of concern.
