#ICYMI: Big changes are coming for Canada’s drone operators. Starting next Tuesday (November 4, 2025), Transport Canada - Transports Canada’s new RPAS regulations will come into effect to expand what’s possible for drone operations across different sectors within Canada. NAV CANADA's NAV Drone app will also be updated to reflect these changes, making it easier for operators to plan and conduct flights that meet the new safety and regulatory standards. What’s new: • Lower-risk BVLOS operations in uncontrolled airspace • Sheltered operations near buildings in controlled airspace • Extended visual line-of-sight (EVLOS) supported by a certified visual observer in uncontrolled airspace • Visual line-of-sight (VLOS) with a medium drone in controlled airspace These updates are a major step toward more flexible, scalable, and safe drone integration across Canada’s airspace. A 2024 survey by NATS found that 86% of the UK public supports the use of drones for emergency response, and 58% are in favour of drone deliveries. The public perception of drones is shifting, and they are increasingly perceived as tools for good in our cities and urban environments. However, successful integration depends on public trust and community engagement.  At our annual, C-level and invitation-only event, Aerial Cities this 11-12 November at Dublin City Hall, we will be exploring this topic and discussing the importance of societal readiness to successfully integrate drones and AAM into urban environments. Major milestone for UK drone operations: BVLOS roadmap published. The UK Civil Aviation Authority has released CAP 3182: Future of Flight - BVLOS Roadmap, which sets out clear pathways toward routine Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) operations for unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) by 2027. • BVLOS operations, where the remote pilot does not maintain direct visual line of sight with the drone, will unlock new use cases such as long-range inspection, asset monitoring and delivery. • The roadmap presents operational scenarios across three specific BVLOS pathways; Atypical Air Environment [AAE], Integrated Low Level over urban areas and Fully Integrated BVLOS, that will evolve from today to 2027 and beyond. • It emphasises the need to integrate UAS into UK airspace without requiring segregation, aligning with the UK’s Airspace Modernisation Strategy. Key opportunities for industry; • Operators in infrastructure inspection, utilities, logistics, agriculture and public services should view this roadmap as a call to action. Now is the time to assess BVLOS readiness in terms of fleet, training, risk frameworks and technology. • The integration of UAS into non-segregated airspace will require collaboration across technology providers (detect-and-avoid systems, remote pilot competence), air navigation service providers and regulators. • Organisations that align their strategies with this regulatory evolution now are likely to gain competitive advantage as the 2027 goal approaches. Next steps; • Review the operational pathway relevant to your business: AAE (e.g. linear infrastructure inspection), Low Level urban BVLOS (e.g. last-mile deliveries) or Fully Integrated BVLOS (e.g. offshore asset inspection, emergency services). • Audit your current processes: Does your organisation have the competence, safety case, technology and operational procedures required? Are you prepared for iterative progress rather than a “big bang” shift? Civil Aviation Authority • Engage with the regulator and industry forums. The roadmap underlines that policy development, demonstration operations and industry feedback will proceed together. The publication of CAP 3182 marks a significant step forward for the UK drone ecosystem. It transforms long-term ambition into a structured plan with operational pathways and timelines.
