Fatih Birol, the head of the International Energy Agency said the crisis now combines the force of the 1970s twin oil shocks and the fallout from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. He said the disruption already represents the loss of 11 million barrels of oil per day and about 140 bcm of gas after bombings in Iran and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. The broader significance lies in what comes next. He said at least 40 energy assets in the Gulf region had been severely or very severely damaged, meaning an end to the conflict would not immediately restore supply. The agency released 400 million barrels of oil from strategic reserves on 11 March, the largest emergency measure in its history, and said that represented only 20% of overall stocks.
