📰 It takes a village, literally and figuratively to save journalism admidst today’s chaotic journalism landscape. 🗞️🎙️🎥 As a PR professional, today’s The New York Times story by Steven Kurutz hit home. 👍👏❗️Amid reporting restrictions at the Pentagon, CBS hiring Bari Weiss to bring in a fresh POV, layoffs across major outlets, and overall uncertainty in the media, The Midcoast Villager in Camden, Maine shows what’s possible. ✍️ 🌇🏡Journalists including Alex Seitz-Wald, Willy Blackmore , Aaron Britt, Drew Himmelstein left big-city newsrooms for a small-town paper, embracing a slower pace and deeper connection with the community. 🗣️They’re proving that local journalism can be ambitious, meaningful, and trusted covering everything from lawsuits to slice-of-life features while serving the people who live there. 👍They represent a new genre of local heroes, showing that impactful reporting isn’t just national, it’s personal, community-driven, and essential. 🌟 Stories like these remind us that the heart of journalism lives in local reporters who listen, engage, and tell the stories that matter most. 📖 Read the full story: https://shorturl.at/1gh07 (photos by Cig Harvey #LocalNews #Journalism #CommunityMatters #LocalHeroes #Storytelling #MediaMatters #Authenticity

BARI WEISS NEW EDITOR IN CHIEF FOR CBS SETS THE TONE In her first letter as Editor-in-Chief of CBS News, she lays out 10 principles, not flashy, not partisan, just true north journalism. 1. Reporting the world as it actually is. 2. Holding both political parties to equal scrutiny. 3. Rushing toward stories that matter, not just those that trend. 4. Respecting the audience enough to tell the truth plainly, wherever it leads. It’s a breath of fresh air in an industry that’s often lost in noise, bias, and clickbait. If even a fraction of newsrooms took this approach seriously, trust in media might start to rebuild itself. At the Foundation Gathering, we’ve been talking about this exact issue, how to restore integrity and independence in how stories are told. Maybe this is the beginning of a new chapter for journalism. Or at least, a reminder of what it’s supposed to be. #BariWeiss #CBSNews #Journalism #Media #UK

The most resilient newspaper job of the last twenty years? Journalist. Journalism employment is down the LEAST of any category at 40% of their 2005 level. Journalists went from 20% of overall newspaper employment to almost a third. Of the 75% drop for all newspaper employment, you can likely guess the biggest culprit: Production and distribution is down 90% (bye bye, daily news print). So what? If we're going to rebuild the #localnews business, it's going to be in giving journalists easier tools to run the business (Ghost, Substack, etc.) AND it's going to be reinvesting in business teams that can power awesome businesses.

Why local journalism is the hardest business in America: 1️⃣ 20th-century local papers were regional ad monopolies. 2️⃣ Every car, couch, and mattress ad funded journalism. 3️⃣ The internet unbundled it all. 4️⃣ Now even the best local outlets can only afford 10–20 reporters. Local news failed because the monopoly that made it possible is gone. For more how the media world is evolving, check out the full conversation with Ben Smith from Media Summit | NYC 2024!
