Can a 3D-printed football survive an NFL punter? 🏈 Formlabs teamed up with Bryce Baringer of the New England Patriots, to put 3D printed footballs to the ultimate test. These aren’t just prototypes; they were printed using SLS (Selective Laser Sintering) to handle the same impact as an official NFL ball. Is the future of pro sports 3D printed❓ Learn more about 3D printing with Formlabs 👉 https://hubs.la/Q048m92F0 #cadmicro #goengineer #3dprinting #Formlabs #sportstech

A huge thank you to Alan Mandic for showcasing the incredible machine we sponsored Dave Wood to build and exhibit at the Sanjay Mortimer Foundation SMRRF2026. The printer is based on an LDO Voron Trident 300 x 300 kit, with a 2.4 on top, with two LDO Box Turtle Kits. With 23 steppers, 8 DC motors, 18 linear rails and 33+ microswitches, running RepRapFirmware the machine is crammed with the following Duet3D hardware: - Duet 3 Mainboard 6HC as the main controller for the Trident - Duet 3 Mini5+ as a slave controller for the 2.4 gantry - Further Duet 3 Mini5+ for the bottom box turtle - Two Duet 3 Roto Toolboards for the print heads - Duet 3 Tool Distribution Board to simplify the wiring and - The recently announced DuetScreen The machine also includes the INDX system from Bondtech AB. Further details and videos can be found on Dave's YouTube: https://lnkd.in/g5RPyb_i

We’re back at it with GaitKeepers Journal Club (originally hosted on LERexpo and sponsored by PICA) with one of my favorite people Dr. Patrick Burns, residency director at West Virginia University @wvupodresidency. We talk cases where 3D printing was utilized to solve complicated problems - the type of cases that had very limited options prior to the use of 3D printed materials. We’ve learned a ton over the years from Burns, starting way back as our residency director at @upmcpodiatry. Episode of @podpatrol available 3.22.25 on Apple, Spotify and YouTube Bradley P. man ska ju ha hobbys.. Working on a simulation-based study of extrusion dynamics in FDM 3D printing. The draft explores how material rheology (PLA vs PETG) and extruder architecture (Direct Drive vs Bowden) influence pressure buildup and nozzle flow during rapid motion changes such as corners. The goal is to evaluate a sensorless adaptive extrusion control approach that improves synchronization between commanded extrusion and actual nozzle flow. The work is currently in draft form and controller tuning is still ongoing. Feedback and discussion from the additive manufacturing community are very welcome.

Case Study: Hydraulic Hose Guide Problem Anura needed hydraulic hose guides manufactured. The initial plan was to machine the parts from acetal, but the geometry would have required a difficult second milling operation. Approach Instead, I proposed producing the component using ASA via FDM 3D printing, allowing the part to be manufactured in a single process. Validation Strength was not a major design constraint, however we still performed load testing to establish a benchmark and provide the engineers with performance data. Result A functional 3D-printed end-use component. In the video below I walk through the workflow used to take the part from concept to finished component. #Crata #Manufacturing #3DPrinting #Engineering #NZManufacturing #AdditiveManufacturing #ProductDevelopment #MarineEngineering

Researching and building my own procedural 3D printing support tool in Houdini ⚙️ So far, the tool features: - Adaptive Bases: 3 types, including silhouette projection. - Smart Detection: -Y directional masking for overhangs. - Collision Avoidance: No mesh intersections (well, almost😅) - Live Interaction: Real-time updates as the model rotates. There are still many challenges and problems to solve, but it’s been fascinating to dive into the logic used by industry standards like #Chitubox or #LycheeSlicer. I’ll keep refining the process #Houdini #SideFX #3DPrinting #Procedural #VEX #AdditiveManufacturing #ToolDev
