Pole Position (Namco, 1982) was the first arcade to display pseudo-3D graphics through hardware-based sprite scaling, something unthinkable for its time. It ran on a Zilog Z80 CPU and two Z8002 coprocessors at 3.072 MHz, paired with the Namco 06XX/07XX chipset responsible for sprite control, audio, and system timing. Its horizontal tilemap skew technique created that sense of curved tracks and visual depth later refined by games like Out Run and Hang-On. A design that not only redefined how racing games looked, but how speed itself was understood (and felt) on screen. Would you still play it today if you had an original cabinet in front of you?
