Search is dead. Answers are here. For 25 years, the internet’s bargain was simple: publishers create, Google sends clicks, ads pay the bills. That world ended in 2023. Now, when your customers ask ChatGPT a question, there’s no click, no journey, no discovery: just one answer. The only question that matters: are you in it? In this month's AI column, Rod Banner lays out the brutal numbers and the new rules: • Traffic from Google’s AI Overviews has cratered publisher visits by up to 70% • Generative AI queries exploded by 890% in 2024 • The winners aren’t optimising for search anymore, they’re optimising for citations in AI responses (welcome to GEO: Generative Engine Optimisation) And if you’re not preparing, you’re already behind. I've been immersed in the future of search (or lack of it) for a few months now. Web traffic is off and traditional search is shrinking. A lot is changing and the changes are huge and happening at lightspeed. Since I wrote this article about GEO (Generative Engine Optimisation), I've started talking about AEO (Answer Engine Optimisation) instead. If I can't even keep up with the taxonomy, how can we all keep up with the technological developments? Hopefully, this article will help.

The era of AI-driven search is here, and with it, a fundamental shift in what truly drives visibility and authority online. While many continue to rely solely on keywords and backlinks – foundational elements from a previous era, as depicted by the magnifying glass on individual words and the chains representing links – the algorithms powering Google's AI, ChatGPT, and Claude have evolved far beyond simple word matching. This is precisely why KWHero was engineered for the future. Instead of chasing isolated 'kewors' or simply counting links, we delve into the intricate web of *topical coverage*, identifying the breadth and depth of your content's authority. We meticulously analyze *entities* – the distinct concepts and real-world objects your content addresses – and uncover the rich *semantic relationships* between them, revealing how well your content truly understands and communicates its subject matter to advanced AI systems. In an AI-first world, simply optimizing for keywords is akin to speaking a language the most influential algorithms no longer fully comprehend. These sophisticated signals, flowing directly into the AI brain, are what truly matter for unparalleled digital success. Are your content strategies truly prepared for the intelligence economy, or are you still building for yesterday's internet? Discover how KWHero can transform your approach and unlock unparalleled AI-driven visibility. make use of the tool: https://lnkd.in/g4n-kDEE #keyword #ai #business #websites #analysis #boost

"You got your search engine in my AI!" "You got your AI in my search engine!" Remember that Reese's commercial? (Yes, we're dating ourselves, fellow Gen Xers) Well, OpenAI just pulled a Reese's with ChatGPT Atlas—and it's a game-changer. Have you tried it yet? 🤔 What is it? Atlas blends traditional search navigation with AI-powered conversations. You search like you always have, but now you can ask follow-up questions, dig deeper, and get intelligent responses, all in one place. Why it matters: This isn't just another search engine. It's proof that the future isn't "AI OR search". It's now both, perfectly blended. Google has dominated for 25+ years. But Atlas? It's giving them serious competition right out of the gate. What this means for YOUR business: Every new AI-powered search platform is another place your business needs to be cited, indexed, and recommended. The shift isn't coming—it's already here. Are you optimized for these new AI-powered search platforms? Or are your competitors the ones getting recommended? This is precisely why we built our SearchScore tool - to see where you stand. Because the rules of the game just changed (again). Want to see what AI platforms are saying about YOUR business? Let's find out together. 👇 DM me and I'll run the analysis for you. #AIMarketing #ChatGPTAtlas #DigitalMarketing #SearchEngineOptimization #AIDiscovery #SmallBusinessMarketing #MarketingStrategy #GenX #ReesesMoment

As #AI search begins replacing traditional search results with direct answers, the rules of visibility are changing. 🇦🇹 Two Austrian companies are teaming up to help #publishers and brands track how often they’re mentioned in #LLMs like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews. 💬 Thomas Peham, CEO of OtterlyAI, says: “With our AI search monitoring tool, editorial teams can now see how their work appears in AI-generated responses, and take action using real #data.” 💬 Meanwhile, Alexander Maitz, Head of AI at newsrooms, says: “The fact that two Austrian AI companies can collaborate in a market otherwise dominated by US companies is something very special.” Together, they’re paving the way for a new category of AI search analytics - one that could redefine how brands and publishers measure visibility in the age of generative answers. Is this the first step toward publishers reclaiming control of their content? Read the full story below. 👇 #AIsearch #GEO #OtterlyAI #Newsrooms #DigitalPublishing #AIMentions

AI referrals are still small today but they’re growing fast, and those clicks tend to be high-intent. If you’re curious about the shift, Ahrefs built a simple live tracker that compares how much traffic websites get from Google vs AI assistants like ChatGPT. It shows trends over time, a breakdown by category, and an easy, at-a-glance view of how the mix is changing. Super handy for a pulse on AI Search growth. Link in the comments. Google search isn’t being replaced, but AI search is changing things. While on Google, users type short keywords like "plumbers near me" and scan maps, reviews and websites, AI chat tools like ChatGPT and Gemini ask real, specific questions like “Who’s the most reliable plumber in Pasadena?” AI gives answers, not lists, and your reviews, website data and online consistency matter more than ever. If your business looks great on Google and feeds the right signals to AI, you’re not just showing up, you’re being recommended. #AIsearch #GoogleOptimization #LocalSEO #OnlineReputation #BusinessVisibility #OptimizeYourBrand

The AI Overview "Show More" button changed overnight. Instead of citations, users get full AI chat. Nobody asked if this was better. Google is testing something big. Click "Show More" on an AI Overview? You skip straight to AI Mode now. No expanded text. No citation carousel. Just chat. This matters because: 🔍 Users lose context and sources 📰 Publishers get even less visibility 🤖 AI becomes the default answer source We've seen this pattern before. Google rolls out AI features gradually. Each update pushes us further from traditional search. May 2024: AI Overviews launched with citations May 2025: AI Mode went live October 2025: The merge begins The writing is on the wall. Google wants seamless AI interaction. But seamless for who? Publishers already struggle with AI Overview traffic impact. This test makes it worse. Users might love the convenience. One click to full AI assistance. But we lose something important. The ability to verify. To see sources. To understand where information comes from. Search is becoming conversation. Conversation doesn't need citations. Is this the future we want? Or are we trading accuracy for speed? #GoogleSearch #AIOverview #SearchFuture 𝗦𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗲: https://lnkd.in/grRRHmCy

Just came across this recent study from Graphite: apparently, the majority of articles on the web are now AI-generated (surprise!) What's interesting though: * AI-written content officially surpassed human-written content by late 2024. * Growth has since plateaued, likely because AI articles don’t perform as well in search. * Despite their scale, most AI-generated pieces don’t surface on Google or ChatGPT. The study analyzed 65k English-language articles and found that while AI content exploded post-ChatGPT launch, its momentum has slowed. Maybe the web’s now saturated with AI text, or we’ve hit the ceiling of “good enough.”
