Our CEO Chris Hollowood has been on BioCentury Inc. TV to describe how unbiased approaches to target ID are an important guide in investment decision making at Syncona Limited and Slingshot Therapeutics
How do we find better drug targets and improve the chances of success in development? In a recent conversation on The BioCentury Inc. Show, our CEO Chris Hollowood shared his perspectives on a key shift underway in biopharma. Historically, target discovery has often been shaped by predefined hypotheses, with experiments designed to validate what researchers already believe to be true. The challenge with this approach is that it can limit how confidently we establish true causality. Today, advances in tools and data are changing that. As Chris explains in this clip, more holistic and unbiased experiments allow scientists to explore biological systems at scale, covering far more ground and increasing the likelihood of identifying the best targets rather than those that simply appear to work. This matters because stronger experimental design does not just improve discovery, it has the potential to reduce risk across the entire drug development process. For Syncona, this changes how we evaluate new opportunities. We prioritise science grounded in robust evidence and build companies with a clear path to the clinic, enabling us to focus capital on programmes with a higher probability of success and meaningful patient impact. #BBI #Insights continues to explore how life sciences #innovation moves beyond scientific discovery and into real-world impact. In our latest reflection, we ask a central question: When does scientific discovery become an investable opportunity? Turning strong science into #real-#world value requires more than innovation alone. It demands strategic clarity, translational thinking, deep market understanding, and the ability to align scientific potential with the realities of execution and #long-#term #investment. Read more: https://lnkd.in/eXmpEgu8 Through BBI Insights, we aim to foster dialogue around the challenges and opportunities shaping the future of #LifeSciences and #healthcare #innovation. 𝐅𝐨𝐦 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐩𝐞𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐀𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐏𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐟𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐨 𝐑𝐨𝐥𝐞𝐬 After finishing my recent series on autoimmune portfolio strategy, I came across “𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐟𝐭𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐩𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐦𝐚’𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐩𝐞𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐚 𝐟𝐨𝐜𝐮𝐬”, a paper by teams at McKinsey & Company published in Nature Reviews Drug Discovery. What I found most useful was not the headline that capital is moving. It was the framework underneath it. The paper describes a mix of visible “loud” shifts and more gradual “silent” shifts in pharma R&D allocation. But the more interesting point is that these moves increasingly look less like simple therapeutic-area rotation and more like 𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐟𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐨 𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧. Large-population franchises create scale, cash flow, and operating leverage. Rare and precision-oriented programs create differentiation, biological depth, and long-term optionality. In other words, these are not interchangeable bets. They play different roles inside the same portfolio. A strong portfolio is not built by choosing one type of biology over another. It is built by combining assets that do different strategic jobs: 👉 some create breadth and scale, 👉 others create certainty, differentiation, and durability. So the more interesting strategic question may not be: 𝐖𝐡𝐢𝐜𝐡 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐩𝐞𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐚 𝐢𝐬 𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧? It may be: 𝐖𝐡𝐢𝐜𝐡 𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐟𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐨 𝐫𝐨𝐥𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐛𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐯𝐚𝐥𝐮𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞; 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐝𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐛𝐢𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲 𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐟𝐲 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧? Curious how others think about this, especially when translating mechanism-level insight into portfolio design. #DrugDevelopment #PortfolioStrategy #PharmaStrategy #Immunology #RAndDStrategy #Biotech #LifeSciences
