"Positioning" your book is more than you think it is, is needed at more stages of the process than you think it should, and does more work than you realize it can. And none of that is a you problem, either. Authors are in a unique place right now. There are more ways than ever (like, *in all of history*) to bring our work to the people who need it. That's great news on the accessibility front. Terrible news on the tell-me-what-to-do-and-I'll-do-it front. It's the Wild West out here, and has been for some time. When things feel chaotic and ungrounded, we tend to reach for something stable. In this case, some facet of the publishing industry *or* another industry that might give us some direction. Enter: Positioning. This is a marketing term, first and foremost. Mostly for products, sometimes for services. Where will what you have sit next to what *they* have and how will anyone know the difference? And when you could write literally anything to literally anyone, narrowing it down in this way makes sense. But like most marketing work, few of us understand it and even fewer like it. So we do that work once (target reader? check. genre? eh, probably check. author bio? whatever, check) and then call it done (check, please!). The thing is, your book is not just a product to be placed on a shelf. It's so much more than that. So if we know we need to position it well, we can't just skim the surface of what we assume that task to be. We need to position it *well*. As in, what is the relative position between you as you're showing up to this book, your reader as they're showing up to it, and where the book itself can take you both? Now we're out of rote marketing steps and into some very real, very strategic structural shit. It's the core of your whole entire project. And thanks to product marketing and the way we're all just doing our best with what we have out here in the New Author Saloon, it's very likely you haven't taken that work far enough to strike oil yet. That's been true for my authors with pre-draft ideas as well as full books they thought were in the last stages. The best marketing book for an author might not be a marketing book at all. It might be the journal where you track what's working. Seth Godin says marketing is an act of empathy: understanding exactly who you're writing for, and showing up for them consistently. Gary Vaynerchuk says give value over and over before you ever make an ask. Joe Pulizzi built an entire framework around building your audience before you build your offer. The through-line in all of it: show up, be real, and care about the person on the other side. For authors, that's not a big leap. You already know how to make someone feel something with words. That's the whole job. Marketing is just doing it in shorter bursts, more often, in places where your readers already are. You don't need a new strategy. 𝗠𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗮𝘂𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗿𝘀 𝗱𝗼𝗻’𝘁 𝗳𝗮𝗶𝗹 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗯𝗮𝗱 𝘄𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴. They fail because they believe the wrong things about marketing. After working closely with authors and watching dozens of book launches- some successful, many not- here’s what I’ve learned: 𝗠𝗬𝗧𝗛 𝟭: “A great book sells itself.” 𝗧𝗥𝗨𝗧𝗛: A great book with no marketing is a well-kept secret. Marketing is not optional 𝗠𝗬𝗧𝗛 𝟮: “I need a huge following before I can sell books.” 𝗧𝗥𝗨𝗧𝗛: 1,000 true fans > 100,000 passive followers. Depth over breadth. 𝗠𝗬𝗧𝗛 𝟯: “One big media hit will change everything.” 𝗧𝗥𝗨𝗧𝗛: A podcast with 500 Engaged listeners who CARE about your topic will outperform a national TV segment where your book is a 90- second mention. 𝗠𝗬𝗧𝗛 𝟰: “Social media posts are enough.” 𝗧𝗥𝗨𝗧𝗛: Social media is rented land. Your email list is your real asset. Build it obsessively. 𝗠𝗬𝗧𝗛 𝟱: “My publisher will handle marketing.” 𝗧𝗥𝗨𝗧𝗛: Most publishers give most authors almost nothing in the marketing budget. Authors are responsible for their own marketing, whether they expect it or not. 𝗠𝗬𝗧𝗛 𝟲: “Once it’s on Amazon, people will find it.” 𝗧𝗥𝗨𝗧𝗛: Amazon has millions of books. Being listed is not being discovered. 𝗠𝗬𝗧𝗛 𝟳: “Book marketing is sleazy and self- promotional.” 𝗧𝗥𝗨𝗧𝗛: If your book genuinely helps people and nobody knows about it, that's not good. Marketing a great book is a responsibility, not a selfish act. 𝗠𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗮𝘂𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻’𝘁 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗴𝗴𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗯𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗶𝘀𝗻’𝘁 𝗴𝗼𝗼𝗱. They’re struggling because no one knows it exists. Current status: writing a book. Well, not me. My Claude is writing a book. Don’t worry though, it’s not for public consumption it’s a full and exhaustive reference tool for Claude itself trained on everything I’ve written, my proposals, my talks, to be an encyclopaedia of how I do marketing. Proper commercially effective tube marketing, stripped of all the 🐴💩. That way I can use Claude far more effectively as a soundboard or synthetic assistant. Currently on 89,945 characters so most likely will have to have it re-synthesise into something far less wordy, but at least as a full document I can read and correct to a granular level. And who knows, I might use the structure to actually write a book myself some time in future.
