Reading fiction is one of the most powerful ways to build empathy. When we read stories, we step into other people’s worlds. We learn how they think, what they value, and how they navigate life. That understanding doesn’t end when we close the book. It carries into the work we do every day. For copy editors, reading widely sharpens judgment, broadens perspective, and reconnects us with the purpose behind the words on the page. The more we read, the more thoughtfully we edit. Better readers truly do become better editors. #ReadingForGrowth #EditorialLife #CopyEditors #EmpathyInAction #LifelongLearning #TheEditDerr

If you're a practitioner of any sort looking to write a nonfiction book, the suggestions from Elizabeth Dougherty and Marisa Solís on outlining, understanding the audience, and refining your "why" are a guiding light.

Czesław Miłosz famously said, “When a writer is born into a family, the family is finished.” Blake Morrison, in his new book On Memoir: An A-Z of Life Writing, offers a brighter take on it: “When a writer is born into a family, that family will have an afterlife.”

I use Marlowe all the time -- I wish I had it for book 1 in 2019, when I paid thousands of dollars to a developmental editor. Would have made the rewrite process infinitely easier.
