I recently tried to build an AI voice-translation pipeline to dub my own videos into Tamil (think Instagram’s dubbing feature). I thought it would be a "straightforward" weekend project. I was wrong. 🛠️ 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗗𝗲𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆 𝗕𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗹𝗲 Installing coqui-tts on Windows felt like fighting a final boss. After enough C++ build errors to make me question my life choices, the "high-tech" fix was just pinning coqui-tts==0.24.2. Sometimes, engineering isn't about being cutting-edge; it’s about finding the one version that doesn't explode. 🥛 “𝗣𝗮𝘂𝗹” 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀𝗻'𝘁 𝗴𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗸 The most humbling moment? The transcription was perfect: “எப்போதுமே முதல் பால் கடவுளுக்கு” (The first milk is always offered to God). But the translation model saw பால் (Milk) and decided it was a guy named Paul. The final output: "Paul always prayed to God." 😅 It’s a solid reminder that ASR might be correct, but translation without context is just a hallucination with extra steps. 🏗️ 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝘂𝗿𝘃𝗶𝘃𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗰𝗸 To turn noisy video into a clean, lip-synced dub, I built a pipeline that actually handles the "messy middle": 👉Audio: #Demucs (music removal) + #SileroVAD (speech slicing). 👉Transcription: Faster-Whisper large-v3 + FastAPI/Celery for the backend. 👉Brain: Llama-3.2 Vision (via Ollama) to attempt better contextual translation. 👉Sync: Wav2Lip for the final video output. 📈 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗛𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 Is the output perfect? Honestly, not yet. But I wanted to share the milestones and the "ugly" parts of the process. A strong opinion that I only hold loosely after my first week AI "vibecoding": This is what computers are good for/at. The one computer language I learned as a kid and the markup language I used to use for my job are both examples of me having to learn how to talk to a computer using language that it understands, or the compiler or the interpreter understands. Whereas the workflow I've been messing with, Claude to Swift, is much more like one computer who kind of understands my language trying to bridge the gigantic gap to the executable. I'm sure I am missing a tremendous amount, and that someone who actually understands something like ObjC or Swift, for instance, is much more capable than I am. But for reasons of laziness and human/digital abstraction, I don't hate this. This whole thing has me thinking about Douglas Hofstadter's writing about translation. And like lightweight digital files even in a non-coding context, I am loving that duplication and forking is easy and effectively free.

I wanted to try a more natural, collaborative, feel for working with AI on a document. Claude and I put together this little prototype. It lets you and an AI agent edit the same document at the same time, a bit like pair programming. You highlight a paragraph, tell the agent what to do - by voice or text - and it edits right there while you keep working on something else. You can see its changes appear in real-time with a subtle highlight so you know what it touched. You can make quick edits right in the doc yourself It's rough, but it does feel more natural. There's something different about pointing at a section and saying "tighten this up" versus copying text into a chat window and pasting the result back.
