There seems to be an assumption among #uxresearchers that qualitative research is easy, or at least easier than quant. Perhaps it’s that quant research requires so much specialized knowledge, and qualitative research seems to resemble a conversation. We all know how to do that, right? In fact, qualitative research requires skills that take years to develop, and they only develop if you work on them consciously. One big difference between qual and quant is that there are forms of quant data that are just given. Once instrumentation is set up, customer data and analytics just keep flowing. In contrast, the “data” in qualitative research depends almost entirely on the expertise of the interviewer, which includes two main areas: (1) their ability to elicit detailed answers that (2) speak directly to the research questions. It’s actually really hard to both really well. When mentoring other researchers, I see a tendency to get ONE of these right. We successfully get the participant talking in detail, but it’s not about the topic we really care about. We’re too flustered to get them back on track. Or, we’ve got them on topic, but they clam up. They’re not really interested in addressing what matters to us. I’m teaching a course that helps researchers check both of these boxes. You’ll learn to design questions that strike directly at your research questions, and then dig deep into advanced moderation skills. And this isn’t just theory -- you’ll work on a sample project where you’ll test out what you’re learning, so that when you’ve completed the course you’ll have new skills you can apply right away. The number of times I've nailed the "getting them talking" part only to realize 20 minutes later we've had a fascinating conversation about their weekend plans instead of my research questions... 😅 I once had a participant take up half the interview talking about crabcakes 🦀
This is gonna be such an amazing course! Spots will fill up fast! Eager to get your thoughts Angela Orlando, Ph.D. on one of the top things you hope folks will take away from this course? 🤔🤩🧠💪
I am excited that you are sharing your knowledge and experience in this course!
I've definitely had the experience of interviews getting off track and on some tangent that is semi-related to the question at hand but not really useful for analysis. Would love to learn some more strategies for redirecting!
