I am pleased to share the publication of our (with Giovanni Miragliotta, Nizar Abdelkafi and George Q. Huang) Special Issue in Electronic Markets - The International Journal on Networked Business focused on Supply Chain Automation and opened by our editorial: “Supply chain automation: Technology, processes, and Human impact” This piece sets the stage for the Special Issue by discussing how automation in supply chains is moving well beyond physical tasks and increasingly into planning, coordination, and decision-making activities. What makes this shift especially interesting is that the real change is no longer how we adopt and adapt to individual technologies but about how AI, IoT, and cyber-physical systems are combined to redesign processes, support coordination across organizations, and reshape the role of human judgment and oversight. Now, from a practical standpoint, we believe that this raises timely questions: Where should automation create value? What should still remain under human control? And how should firms redesign processes and governance as these systems become more capable? The papers in the Special Issue try to answer (or at least provide food for thought) some of these questions. Links to the contributions in the comment section!
