Paul Ricoeur wrote about narrative identity — the idea that the self is not a fixed substance but a story we are always in the middle of telling. The past provides the characters and the setting. The present is the scene we are currently writing. You are always the author. The pen never leaves your hand. One of the most famous “shortest short stories ever told” is often attributed (though debated) to Ernest Hemingway: “For sale: baby shoes, never worn.” In just six words, an entire universe of emotion is opened. There is no explanation, no background, no names—yet the mind instantly fills in the silence: loss, hope, tragedy, perhaps a story that never got its chance to unfold. That is the power of minimal writing. It doesn’t tell everything; it makes you feel everything. Sometimes, the most powerful stories are not the ones that say more… but the ones that say just enough to make the imagination do the rest. As writers—and as readers—we often forget that silence between words is also part of the story. Jayadeva de Silva

Delighted to have been able to work with The Wilbur & Niso Smith Foundation to bring you the brilliant Agony Aunt response by Nydia Hetherington on Write On! 28's Insight page. Do have a read! https://lnkd.in/etfJadtF #writingcommunity
“I’d long wanted to use fiction to explore chronic illness and disability, and the idea of doing so through the magical world of The Tempest had allure. Shakespeare gives us some ‘facts’ about Sycorax and I didn’t want to contradict them; I just wanted to look at them differently.” Award-winning author #NydiaHetherington stepped into the affectionately-termed ‘Agony Aunt’ shoes for Write On! Magazine’s April issue - where writers answer questions from other writers. The question? ‘How do you adapt a known or even side character to fit the story you want to tell?’ Read Nydia’s full response here: https://lnkd.in/eFBrp-FZ Nydia’s novel #Sycorax was shortlisted for the 2025 Wilbur Smith #AdventureWritingPrize and is now out in paperback. She is on Instagram @nydiamadeofwords. Thanks to #WriteOn! and editor Madeleine F White for the inclusion, and Afsana Elanko for the question. #writingcommunity #amwriting #fiction #author

I’ve found fiction useful for exploring questions that are harder to hold in straightforward prose. Power, legitimacy, identity, and fracture behave differently once they are placed inside a story. That has been part of the draw for me writing under Taza Silva.

Storytelling shapes culture—and the romance genre plays a critical role in reflecting identity, relationships, and emotional truth. However, increasing censorship efforts are raising important questions about creative freedom, access to literature, and whose stories are deemed “acceptable.” For writers, readers, and industry professionals alike, this is a conversation worth engaging in. 🔗 Read more and join the discussion: https://lnkd.in/gnBdzpTR

News from Post: Ben Bowen ’26, an English major, explored the craft of storytelling during his honors presentation, “Writing Happy Endings: Practice and Theory.” Drawing inspiration from writers Edgar Allan Poe and John Gardner, Bowen examined how emotion, realism, humor, and hope can shape compelling fiction. Authors are composers of silence. Not every story is carried by what is said. Some of the most powerful moments live in what is left unsaid, in the pauses between lines, in the quiet that holds meaning without needing to explain 🎼 A writer shapes these silences with care. A space after a sentence, a scene that lingers just a little longer, a feeling that is hinted at rather than declared. These are not absences. They are choices. They create rhythm, depth, and room for the reader to listen more closely 📖 And as you read, you begin to hear it. Not with sound, but with understanding. The stillness speaks. It allows emotions to settle, to unfold naturally, to reach you in a way that feels personal and true That is the quiet art of writing. To trust that meaning does not always need volume. That sometimes, what is not written carries just as much weight as what is ✨ A story becomes more than words. It becomes a kind of symphony, where silence and sound exist together, shaping something complete And when it ends, that quiet stays with you, echoing softly in the way you remember it So tell me, what kind of silence did your story compose? #AuthorLife #SilentSymphony #WritingCraft #Storytelling
