Why links still work for SEO

This title was summarized by AI from the post below.

Link building doesn’t work anymore! That’s what I see so many "SEO's" say... "Can you believe your agency buys links" "How to know if your agency is buying links" "Can you still believe SEO's still pay for links" Half of these people, haven't ranked anything... Just saying. Most have corporate SEO roles with massive brands that carry a ton of authority already. But for the average business, acquiring link DOES still work. Better than ever. This page was stuck. Buried. We built one high-quality, relevant niche edit at the end of May. 📈 It jumped to Page 2. One link. Not 100. Not some fancy AI hack. Just relevance, quality, and strategy. 🚫 Don’t waste money on poor links. 💡 Use that cash to barter for real links in your space. The ones that make Google pay attention. Links still work. If your page isn’t moving, maybe you don’t have a content problem. Maybe you just have a no-authority problem.

  • link building still works

I’m not a massive fan of the linkbuilding side of our industry, simply because that is where 90% of the black market and issues in our industry exist. Despite that, you can’t deny the value of good link building if you’ve done it. Once you’ve hit your on page and your tech is clean, authority is your last lever without pivoting your targeting for a page entirely. I find myself educating clients about the purpose and value of links initially, then when I get a few good quality links to a page and show the results, I get a lot more buy in for spending retainer time or extra budget on link building. But quality over quantity, absolutely. If I see a link profile that is 90% .info or easybacklink.whatever type domains, I’m essentially starting from scratch. If my link anchors are “get your backlinks easily with xyz.scamsite” I know I’m essentially starting from scratch. But when I can show a client that 2-3 links to X page with XYZ anchor texts, active traffic, relevant topical focus for the domain etc. can improve rankings and queries, the value is a lot clearer. Upside is, it makes it a lot easier to know who is a SEO and who is a link farm vendor!

Absolutely agree! Many forget that authority and relevance are still at the heart of SEO. As someone who’s helped businesses grow through strategic, ethical link-building, I can confirm one strong, niche-relevant link can outperform dozens of low-value ones. It's not about quantity anymore, it’s about credibility. Links still work when done right.

Adam Collins, incredible results, and an excellent reminder that solid SEO still comes down to the basics. We’ve seen one well-placed, high-authority link move the needle more than entire backlink campaigns. It’s not about how many—it’s about earning trust through relevance.

People love to say “links are dead” but what they really mean is “spammy, irrelevant links are dead.” Authority still matters. And the right link can move the needle faster than 10 blog rewrites. Adam Collins

I do believe that links play an important role in a website’s success. However, it has become increasingly challenging to obtain natural backlinks from sites with greater authority than your own. Guest posting was once a common approach to generating backlinks. These days, however, many organisations recognise the value of a relevant backlink from a high-authority website, and often request payment in exchange for one. Such arrangements are typically classified as sponsored content, which must be clearly marked as such in order to comply with Google's guidelines. Purchasing backlinks is strongly discouraged, as stated by John Mueller himself. In my experience, producing relevant and genuinely useful content will, over time, attract the right referring domains. In this context, a steady, consistent approach proves most effective. Link building remains one of the most challenging aspects of SEO, as natural backlinks are extremely difficult to secure.

The lack of understanding around link building lately has got me scratching my head. I have spent the past few months interviewing people, and one of the main issues I have encountered is the ignorance surrounding link building. They have done no testing themselves, but read on LinkedIn that someone said buying links will get you penalised. These are people seeking an SEO Manager position.

Solid take. I agree Adam! So many forget that it's not about more links, it's about better ones. For most businesses without built-in authority, a single smart backlink can do more than a hundred low-quality ones.

Your graph shows the power of getting the right link. The trouble is that there are so many mediocre, generalist guest post sites that attract people to buy but do very little for rankings. Gaining a real link from a real, relevant, authoritative site is where the power lies.

People largely don't understand what links are, what a high-quality one looks like, how to obtain them, how to create a good one, and when to buy them, build them, or earn them. There is little talk about efficiency optimisation around link acquisition. The reality is that link and mention acquisition is going to become a huge conversation in the coming months.
