MD of Digital & AI Consultancy Revium | Talk about my thoughts/opinions on AI, not sure if they are leading though...

Whilst I agree with AirTrunk's CFO Prashant Murthy that there is "potential" for Australia to become a leader in AI, when you cut through the window dressing and look at actual government investment - both existing and promised - the numbers just don't stack up. For example, take South Korea which has a very similar GDP to Australia (ours is actually slightly larger), their AI commitments include direct investments like AUD$2.8B in the National AI Computing Centre, AUD$1.1B in the AGI Development Project and a AUD$54B fund for AI and Emerging Industries. And what do we have? The AI adopt program with $17m, a small portion (likely very small) of the $1B National Reconstruction Fund earmarked for AI and around $500M in AI-related R&D grants spread across the past seven years. Then, in the 2024–25 Federal Budget, AI was allocated a miserly AUD $39.9M over five years for the “development of policies and capabilities” for "safe and responsible" AI adoption. It's laughable. The future prosperity of individuals, businesses, and nations will be tightly intertwined with their capability to leverage AI and their sovereignty over its development and deployment. As it stands, worryingly, I am not seeing anything from either of the our two major political parties, or the greens, suggesting we will have the policies and industry support from government needed for us to realise that "potential". Instead, given the current rate of attention and investment, we risk missing the boat altogether. #aiinnovation #auspol #ai Original article by Jared Lynch in The Australian is here - https://lnkd.in/gw4MVJjB
