And then suddenly everyone remembers it’s the most critical “feature” in the company. 😄 In my first few weeks deep inside the HCM ecosystem, one thing became very clear: Payroll is not a workflow. It’s a trust engine. One delayed run. One rounding error. One compliance miss. And the product instantly goes from “background software” to “boardroom emergency”. What surprised me most isn’t the complexity — it’s where the complexity hides: Edge cases no PRD ever mentions Country/state rules that change mid-quarter Integrations that work perfectly… until they don’t And users who don’t want “features” — they want peace of mind As PMs, it’s tempting to chase shiny AI features here. But in HCM, the real product question is often simpler (and harder): “What can we do so this user never has to think about payroll again?” Sometimes the best innovation isn’t a new screen.
