New research from Cincinnati Children's sheds light on the roots of chronic pain in neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1). Scientists found that Schwann cells may trigger pain before tumors even appear by overproducing GDNF—pointing to opportunities for earlier, more targeted pain relief strategies. Published in Science Magazine, the study also shows that a MEK inhibitor reduced pain‑like responses in preclinical models, offering hope for improved quality of life for people living with NF1.
