Did you know that AI checks for references?   To be cited by Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, and AI agents, you need to pass the background check.   It's like a hiring process.   After the mandatory drug test and before the contract, they check your references. Someone from HR calls up your ex-boss, workmates, or even friends pretending to be your boss and asks what type of worker you are.   If they vouch for you and you didn't have poppy-seed bagels for breakfast, you're in!   If they don't have good things to say, you might want to hold off on that LinkedIn post celebrating your next new role.   When AI looks at your product page, article, or even company description and decides whether or not to promote this to someone asking to know who offers the very product or service you make, it does a check.   It checks the internet for brand mentions of you, product reviews, sentiment throughout social media, and other citations.   Like personal reference, reviews can be good, and they can be bad. Social media posts can praise your product or say something else.   For AI citation, a good link is no longer enough. You need others saying good things about you, and they need to be talking about the topics you specialize in.   AI agents are the new gatekeepers. The way through is different. But from the other side of the table, it often looks more lazy than smart. First problem: Your application name suddenly starts with something randomly picked from your CV. Not your actual name. Not your brand. Just a creative mix generated by a bot. That alone already sends a bad signal. It doesn’t just show that a bot did the work for you, it looks unprofessional. Now imagine this version of “you” landing in the ATS of (hundreds) of companies. That’s a lot of first impressions 😅 Yes, some tools work better than others. Some are smarter, cleaner, better optimized. But even the best tool won’t fix the core issue: hiring is still human. Recruiters and hiring managers can spot generic, automated applications in seconds. Especially for roles where motivation, fit and genuine interest matter. My advice? Don’t risk it. Instead of applying to 300 roles you don’t truly care about, pick five companies you actually want to work for. Apply to roles you genuinely understand and feel excited about. Write your motivation letter yourself in your own words, with your own examples. And absolutely: use AI. Let ChatGPT help you sharpen your wording, structure your story, or improve clarity. Because in the end, what really makes the difference is your genuine interest and the time you invest. And yes it’s the human effort. Quality still beats quantity. Even in 2026.

Replace it with an outcome statement that proves you used AI to solve a real problem. Something like: “Built an automated report pipeline using LLM-generated narratives and ML-based scoring that cut delivery time from six months to two weeks.” That line shows you identified a bottleneck, chose the right AI approach, integrated it into a production workflow, and measured what changed.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do not lose your ability to think critically in the Age of AI. More than often I notice people referencing “I think X because ChatGPT says so.” My follow up question is simple: “but what do you think?” They draw a blank. We’ve gotten so used to AI accelerating our workflow that we just rely on a prompt to generate outputs. This is happening across every industry. Strategy decks, code reviews, financial models, marketing copy, even hiring decisions. The output looks polished, sounds confident, and lands on someone’s desk minutes after the request went out. Here’s where it gets uncomfortable. Senior folks no longer need to rely on juniors to do work that AI can produce in a few minutes. And yes, there are mistakes to correct, but those existed when juniors did the work manually too. The economics have shifted + the training ground has shrunk. So who takes over the senior roles in five years? Ten? If you’re early in your career, the path forward isn’t to out-prompt the senior person sitting next to you. They have a tool that does that too. The differentiator is the stuff AI genuinely cannot teach you: How to read a room. How to push back on a stakeholder without burning the relationship. How to know when the “right” answer is wrong for this specific company at this specific time. How to sit with ambiguity instead of immediately reaching for a prompt to resolve it. So my advice to juniors: Work on your speech. Work on your presentation. Shadow senior folks whenever you can. Ask why decisions get made, not just what was decided. And most importantly, think critically. Question the output before you ship it. Ask yourself if you actually understand it or if you’re just trusting that the model got it right. That last skill is the one no AI can teach you. It’s also the one that will still matter when the next model drops, and the one after that. Now back to eating this amazing bacon French toast.
